McPherson, Kan. – After being swept a day before, the Lady Bulldogs came out rolling on Saturday as they took down Saint Mary in three sets, moving them to 19-17 overall and 9-9 in the KCAC which places them fifth for the upcoming conference tournament.
Mac got down early in the first set but a quick timeout turned that right around as an 8-1 run put them in front 11-6 and they never looked back, winning 25-17. Set number two was neck and neck through the first 10 points but a surge by the 'Dogs broke them away from USM; McPherson held off a last minute attack for a 25-19 victory. In the final game, the two squads once again battled for the first half of the contest but the aggression of MC gave them the match after their 25-17 triumph.
Sophie Simon (McPherson, Kan.) had a stellar game for the Lady Bulldogs as she tallied 12 kills with zero errors on just 17 swings; she also had a team-high six assisted blocks. Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) played solidly as well, totaling 10 kills on 15 attempts with two block assists.
In the final home game of her career, Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) posted 34 assists, seven digs, two assisted blocks and a kill.
On the digging front, libero Emily Warner (Wichita, Kan.) was a favorite target of the Spires as she logged 16 digs; next on the list was defensive specialist Jacelle Neill (Lemars, Iowa) who had nine.
McPherson now heads into the KCAC Postseason Tournament. The 'Dogs now face Friends University in Wichita, Kansas for the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup. The contest is set for Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
