McPherson, Kan. – Despite having two players record double-doubles on Saturday, Lady Bulldog basketball lost 76-53 to Friends University. MC now sits at .500 for the season with a 7-7 record; they are 3-1 against KCAC opponents.
Uncharacteristically, Mac got out to a quick start, scoring the first basket and then got ahead by as many as 11 in the first 10 minutes; it took the Lady Falcons half of the period to reach double figures. At the 11:35 mark, the 'Dogs led 18-7 but would only score five points the rest of the way; Friends on the other hand, scored 21 and took a 28-23 lead into the locker room.
McPherson made nine of their 23 field goals with just 2-of-8 three balls finding the bottom of the net; they connected 3-of-5 foul shots. After starting very cold, Friends cashed in on 13-of-32 from the floor but were just 1-of-7 from downtown; they made it to the free throw stripe just once and went 1-of-2. MC turned the ball over 15 times in the first 20 minutes. Both
Aubrey Barton (Pratt, Kan.) and
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) had hit the double-digit mark in points by the end of the first half.
In the second period, Friends came out as the aggressors, forcing quick turnovers and going ahead by 24 by the 11-minute mark. For the final half of the period, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Falcons 25-24. You take away that stretch and it was a very close half between the two squads but alas, all 20 minutes were counted and McPherson lost 76-53.
Another nine buckets were tallied by Mac as they converted on 9-of-26 including missing all seven from distance; they were 12-of-20 from the charity stripe. Shooting a lot of balls in the paint, Friends scored on 56.7% of their field goals, hitting 17-of-30 with 6-of-13 three-point baskets; 8-of-12 free throws dropped for the Falcons.
After the 40 minutes of play, MC put in 18-of-49 from the field and made just 2-of-15 from beyond the arc; a 15-of-25 showing from the stripe was logged by the Lady 'Dogs. McPherson tabbed 40 rebounds with 16 on the offensive side of the floor. They ended the night with 26 turnovers along with 12 assists; two blocks and zero steals were also recorded.
Barton led the way in scoring for the Bulldogs, draining 8-of-15 from the field and a poor showing of 5-of-12 from the line for 21 points; she also netted 10 rebounds with her final one coming in the last minute. Brown scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting with a pair of threes and free throws.
Cami Engelbert (Beloit, Kan.) led the way in assists with six and also bucketed nine points.
Following 20 days of rest, McPherson will be back at it as they host their January Classic on the 3
rd and 4
th.
