Wichita, Kan. – The women’s basketball team at McPherson College moved to 14-11 for the season and 8-7 in the conference after their 72-50 loss to the Friends University Lady Falcons.  The Lady ‘Dogs stay in fifth place in the conference standings and are still one game back from fourth place Kansas Wesleyan as the Lady Coyotes also lost on Thursday.

McPherson had a difficult time scoring in the first part of the opening period, not reaching double-digits until there was less than six minutes left.  The inability to score allowed Friends to jump up to sizable advantage.  The ‘Dogs got the score margin back into single-digits with some back-to-back baskets by the Falcons pushed the score difference back over 10.  After hauling in a handful of offensive rebounds, Friends nailed a three pointer as time ran out, heading into the locker room with a 37-20 lead.

Mac closed out the half making a dreadful 23.8% from the field, cashing in on just 5-of-21 with two three balls; 8-of-11 from the stripe by the Bulldogs kept things from getting too far out of hand.  The Lady Falcons started the half hot but cooled down, ending the period with a 34.1 shooting percentage; 5-of-21 from downtown and 4-of-5 from the foul line were tallied by Friends.  The Falcons were able to pull down 13 first half offensive rebounds and forced 12 turnovers from MC, stealing 10.  Inekka Stevenson seemed to have the Bulldog defense figured out in the first 20 minutes as she bucketed 11 points on 5-of-9 from the floor.

The second period started out rough for McPherson as they were not able to gain any momentum and stayed down by over double-digits for the entire period.  Friends upped their defensive pressure in the game’s second half, forcing Mac to take some rushed shots.  The Lady Bulldogs continued to fight but never had the ability to pull the score within reach.  Friends ended the game playing most of their reserves and came away with a 72-50 victory.

A 33.3 field goal percentage was posted by the Bulldogs in the second half as 11-of-33 went through the net with three of those buckets being from behind the arc; they were perfect from the foul line, making 5-of-5.  Friends also made 11 shots in the period but only took 24; they were 4-of-11 from long range and 9-of-15 from the free throw line.  MC tallied another 12 turnovers in the second period with the Falcons stealing seven.

The end of the contest left McPherson with their second worst shooting percentage of the season as just 16-of-54 shot attempts were counted for a 29.6 percentage; they converted on 5-of-24 from downtown and 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.  The Lady Falcons made 25-of-65 for the game and were 9-of-32 from the three-point line; 13-of-20 free throws went through the hoop for Friends.  The two teams tied in the rebounding category; Mac had 15 offensive boards while the Falcons grabbed 17.  27 of Friends’ points were made from behind the arc and 23 came off of a MC turnover.

Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) made her way to the stripe late in the game to grab the Lady Bulldog top-scoring title with 15 points; she was 4-of-10 from the field, 3-of-8 from distance and 4-of-5 from the stripe.  Tayler Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) recorded the game’s lone double-double as she scored 12 points (4-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from the foul line) and 12 rebounds (nine defensive and three on the offensive end).
