North Newton, Kan. – Just a few days ago, the KCAC postseason seemed out of the question but four games and three conference wins later and the Lady Bulldogs are sitting in eighth and have a chance to slide all the way up to sixth. The 9-8 and 13-10 two-game sweep of the Lady Threshers on April 25th will give MC some much needed momentum heading into the weekend.
Game 1 – at Bethel College – W 9-8
McPherson took advantage of some costly errors by the Lady Threshers, five to be exact, in the opening contest of the doubleheader. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead 8-7 heading into the final inning with the majority of their total coming in the six-run fifth inning. MC scored one in the top of the seventh and then held Bethel to just one, preserving their 9-8 victory.
Nine hits and five walks allowed McPherson to net their nine runs; four different players totaled two hits. Ariel McGee (Denver, Colo.) and Whitney Miller (Valley Center, Kan.) each got aboard a team-high three times with two hits and a walk apiece.
BC had three players put the ball into play twice while two more tallied one hit. Mary Sheridan led the squad in RBI with five off her two homeruns.
McPherson’s Allison Love (Tulsa, Okla.) pitched her 12th complete game of the season; she allowed seven earned runs while striking out five.
Game 2 – at Bethel College – W 13-10
The second competition of the day was high scoring from the get-go. Bethel led 4-1 after one but the Lady Bulldogs scored five in the second and three more in the third to go out in front 9-4. BC retaliated by scoring in each of the last four innings but couldn’t overcome their deficit giving Mac the game two triumph 13-10.
13 total hits were accumulated by MC in their win. McGee went 3-of-5 from behind the plate to lead the squad; she had three RBI along with a homerun. Jenna Kaiser (Billings, Mont.) blasted out two homeruns, tabulating a team-high four RBI; Sydney Lipton (Wellington, Kan.) also shot two out of the park while Ashley Love (Tulsa, Okla.) was the other ‘Dog with two hits while four more had one.
Bethel out-hit Mac by four but weren’t able to string together enough to win the game. Sarah Cunningham was a perfect 4-of-4 with four RBI, leading the Threshers in categories.
Kaila Atkinson (Magnolia, Texas) had a rough go from the mound for MC, allowing four earned runs in the opening inning without tallying an out. Suzi Hamilton (Raytown, Mo.) came in relief and pitched the remainder of the contest, surrendering five earned runs off of 13 hits while striking out two.
McPherson is slated to face the KCAC’s No. 10 Sterling College on April 26th; the home doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. (CT) at Wall Park.
