McPherson, Kan. – It'll be the third straight home game for Bulldog football as they play host to the Bethel College Threshers on Saturday, September 21. The 7:00 p.m. (CT) kickoff is the first conference test for MC who is coming off a 34-0 blowout over Graceland.
Against the Yellowjackets on Sept. 14th, Mac started hot as they picked up a GU fumble and Dominique Henderson ran it all the way home for a 70-yard touchdown.
When they were finally able to play offense, the 'Dogs put seven more on the board after a five-play drive; Terrance Jones covered most of the ground and including a 14-yard scamper for score.
Mike Phillips then kicked home a 33-yard field goal to put McPherson ahead 17-0 heading into halftime.
The Bulldog offense continued to roll in the second half, a 15-yard pass from Jordan Hoffman to Jon White capped a 10-play 79-yard drive.
Phillips popped in another 33-yarder to start off the fourth quarter.
On their next possession, a 59-yard flea flicker from Hoffman to Tremon Robinson put the 'Dogs ahead 34-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
MC got the ball back at their own one-yard line after a strong defensive stance with five minutes to go and proceeded to wind out the clock preserving their 34-0 victory.
McPherson ran for 133 yards, 79 coming from Jones and 36 from senior Scott Thibedeaux. Through the air, 199 net yards were tallied by the 'Dogs. Hoffman tabulated 175 with Michael Ramos leading the squad in receptions with four for 37 while Robinson led the team in yards with 67 coming on two catches.
Senior Phillip Wilson recorded a team-high 13 tackles, eight of which were solo; he also had one tackle for a loss and one pass breakup. Linebacker Cole Long was next in line with his 10 tackles, six were assisted. Trea Lott and Tyler Bruton each logged eight tackles and one interception. Chris Ellison led the team in sacks as he got to the quarterback two times; he had four other tackles from his defensive end position.
Following their contest with Bethel, the 'Dogs will have their first road test of the season as they travel to Salina, Kansas for a battle with the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes. The 6:00 p.m. (CT) showdown is set for September 28th.
Scouting Bethel
The Threshers venture to McPherson following a rough 38-31 overtime loss to Central Methodist University on the 14th. BC sits at 1-1 for the year as they took down Haskell Indian Nations on opening week 41-24.
Over 1000 yards of total offense were gained in the CMU game; Bethel claimed 420 of those, nearly splitting them evenly between rush (204) and pass (216). Stephen Scott racked up 153 yards on 31 attempts running the ball. Quarterback Bo Pratt threw for 196 with three touchdowns; he was 15-of-41 and also logged an interception. Ruben Hernandez gobbled up eight receptions for 89 yards while Raul Silva picked up two touchdown catches and totaled 38 yards on his four snags.
On the defensive front, the Threshers forced four fumbles and recovered all of them. Three of Bethel's players tallied in interception in the loss; both Josh Kaufman and Ja'Terious Pouncy recorded a fumble recovery to go along with their pick. Kaufman, along with Kipp Credeur, led the squad in tackles with 10 apiece; three of Credeur's were for a loss.
This season, the team is averaging 420 yards per game, third in the KCAC. They make the bulk of their yardage on the ground as they put up nearly 200 an outing. 36 points per contest are totaled by the Threshers which is second in the conference. Scott is the team's leading running back; he's put up 302 yards thus far. Pratt has thrown for 425 yards in the squad's two games and has a 7-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio; he is also the second leading rusher with his 52 yards on the ground. Pratt's favorite target has been Hernandez as he's pulled down 11 for 139 yards; next on the team is Tommy Alexander who has eight catches for 159 yards.
The Bethel D is having a tough time stopping people this season as they've allowed over 1071 in their first two games. Along with the yardage, they've surrendered 62 points making for some high scoring contests. Cruder tops the squad in tackles with his 25 total and next on the list is Kaufman with 21.
BC will play at Ottawa on September 28th for the next contest.
