Box Score 4 McPherson, Kan. – It was a 2-2 trip for Lady Bulldog volleyball in the Avila Tournament as the squad won their two matches on Friday (3-1 to Haskell Indian Nations and 3-1 to Stephens College) but lost both on Saturday (3-1 to Central Methodist and 3-2 to Peru State) putting them at 6-3 for the season.
Against the Indians, McPherson took sets one and two by a combined margin of 14 points but gave up number three 25-19. Overtime in the final set ended in Mac's favor as the Bulldogs won it 28-26 for their first win in the tournament.
After losing the first set to Stephens College, MC trounced the Stars in the next three, holding them to 49 points over that span. The win ended day one for the Lady Bulldogs at 2-0.
After a night's rest, Mac had a very close match with CMU to kick the day off. OT ended in the opening set Eagles' favor 27-25. McPherson took game two 25-23 but gave up the next 25-19. The fourth set barely went into overtime as Central Methodist won 26-24. These two teams will meet again this coming Friday at the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament.
Playing back-to-back matches, McPherson quickly turned around to face Peru State. After four sets, the largest margin of victory was four points. In the final game, the Bobcats came out on top by a score of 15-9. The two-game skid made MC drop to 2-2 for the weekend.
Junior
Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) had a productive performance for Mac over the two days, totaling 55 kills, five and a half blocks, seven service aces, and 29 digs. Her 20 kill achievement against Peru State puts her third in the history of McPherson College volleyball for number of kills in a match.
Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) led the way from a setting standpoint for the Lady 'Dogs. She ended the four matches with 75 assists, 81 digs and three service aces. Freshman
Taylor Johnson (Valley Center, Kan.) barely out-dug Phillips as she tallied 83 digs in the tournament; Johnson also scored 36 times between her 32 kills and three and a half blocks.
Another Wednesday conference match is next for the McPherson as they travel to Winfield, Kansas to square off against Southwestern College on September 11th; start time is 7:00 p.m. (CT)
