Looking to rebound from Thursday's tough contest, Mac will attempt to make it seven-straight against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Saturday; the last defeat for the Bulldogs against KWU came back in January of 2010.  Tipoff for the January 11th home contest is set for 7:00 p.m. (CT) with junior varsity starting at 3:00

In their most recent contest, the Bulldogs fought tough with Tabor College in the opening minutes but trailed by seven at the break after a 9-0 run by the Blue Jays closed out the half.  In the second period, Mac put together a 12-0 run to jump in front by four with 10 minutes to go in regulation.  However, after a back-and-forth battle, TC held off the 'Dogs and came out victorious 69-63.

After the 40 minutes, McPherson logged a 40% field goal percentage as 24 of their 60 shots went in; they drained 6-of-25 from behind the three-point line and 9-of-17 from the foul stripe.  41 rebounds were logged by the Bulldogs with 16 coming on the offensive end.  They also netted 18 turnovers, 16 assists, six steals and two blocks.

Brian (BJ) Johnson led the way for Mac with his 12 points on 3-of-4 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe; he also had a team-high seven assists and tabbed six rebounds.  Devirous Johnson and Joey Powers knocked in 10 points; D Johnson had four field goals and a pair of free throws drop while Powers was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.  D Johnson hauled in a team leading 11 rebounds for yet another double; he now has 12 in the team's 17 games.  Erik DeRoo banged in three from downtown for his nine points while Samson Shivers ended the night with just eight.

Bulldogs in the National Rankings: The MC men are currently 8th in the NAIA in total rebounds with 716 and average an 11th best 42.118 per contest; they are also 9th in the Nation in offensive boards an outing at 14.4.  D Johnson is still the country's leading rebounder, he ranks 1st in the following categories: Total Rebounds (215), Rebounds per Game (12.647), Offensive Rebounds per Game (4.529), and Defensive Rebounds per Game (8.118).  Shivers is now 14th in the NAIA D-II with his 50 Total Three-Point Makes and 22nd in Three-Point Field Goals made per Game.

Scouting McPherson – all stats are just in KCAC games: To this point in the conference season, Mac is averaging 77.6 points each time they hit the court.  They are converting on 46% of their field goals while draining just 25 percent from downtown; the 'Dogs bucket 5.4 three balls a contest.  MC currently leads the KCAC in assists per game with 17.6; they also net a conference leading 45.8 rebounds.  6.20 steals and 3.20 blocks are logged by McPherson every outing.  The Bulldog D is giving up 78.2 points to their KCAC opponents which make 43.7 percent from the field and 37% from downtown.

The 'Dogs will play the Ottawa University Braves for their first road competition of next week; Mac travels to Ottawa, Kansas on January 16th with tipoff set for 8:00 p.m.

                                                                            

 

Scouting Kansas Wesleyan

After starting the year off with a  2-2 record, KWU has lost 11-straight and currently holds a 2-13 record while remaining winless in the KCAC at 0-5.  The Coyotes took on the conference leading and the NAIA D-II's 19th ranked Friends University Falcons on Thursday, losing 90-58.

The Falcons came out and dominated things from the get-go against Kansas Wesleyan.  The 'Yotes trailed 44-26 at the break and then couldn't get anything together in the second half, losing 90-58.  KWU ended the game with a 22-of-56 showing from the floor including 5-of-14 from deep; 9-of-15 free throws found the bottom of the net.  Friends had a terrific night shooting as they drained 58.5 percent of their 53 field goals (31-of-53) including 10 from behind the arc; they also knocked in 18-of-24 from the charity stripe.  It was a low rebounding game as just 59 total boards were recorded; the Falcons won the battle of the glass with 32.  Kansas Wesleyan logged 14 turnovers, 11 assists, nine steals and two blocks in their loss.

Brock Borovetz led the way for the Coyotes with his 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with both foul shots falling; he also tallied a team-high three assists while playing 31 minutes.  Michael Johnson was the only other KWU player to hit the double-digit mark with his 10 points; he was 4-of-10 from the floor with 2-of-3 from deep going down.  With rebounds coming at a premium, Nick Boehler led the team with just six boards.

Through their 15 games, KWU has averaged 74 points per game while hitting 39.9 percent of their field goals; 96 total three balls have fallen at a 32.9 percentage.  They are knocking in 69.5 percent of their foul shots.  On the rebounding front, Kansas Wesleyan tabs 37.5 each time out and have a negative 5.1 rebounding margin.  They record 14.2 turnovers, 11.3 assists, 7.3 steals and 3.7 blocks a game.  In conference play, the Coyotes are last in the following categories: Scoring Offense (63.8), Score Margin –(13.6), Field Goal percentage (36.7), Three-Point percentage (24.1), Assists (8.60), and Assist-to-Turnover Ratio (0.62)

Johnson is leading the team this season in scoring with his 14 point average; he's made a team-high 65 field goals and 54 free throws.  The 'Yote to see the most playing time is Borovetz who averages 27.6 minutes a game; he is second on the team in points per game with 13.1 while making 40.3 percent of his field goals.  Dylan Hidalgo has started in each of his 13 games this season and nets 10.6 points a contest; he is the team's leading assist man with 38 on the year.

KWU will be at home for the next contest as they host the Bethany College Swedes on January 16th.
