McPherson, Kan. – On Sunday, it will have been one month since the Lady Bulldogs last tasted victory as they defeated Sterling College. This Saturday, Mac faces Kansas Wesleyan University and hopes it can stop the bleeding one-day short; tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT) with JV kicking the day off at 1:00
MC's most recent defeat is one that needs to be short remembered as they dropped a 90-48 contest against Tabor College on Thursday. TC got out to a quick lead and cruised to a 41-28 halftime advantage; Mac's Chandler Short scored 10 of her team's points. In the second period, the 'Dogs continued to have difficulties putting the ball through the hoop, getting down by 20+ early. Both teams put in their reserves to finish out the game and as the buzzer sounded the Lady Jays had a 90-48 lopsided victory.
Mac closed out the contest with a 31.6% shooting percentage, seeing 18-of-57 go through the net; they counted 4-of-19 from downtown and 8-of-13 from the foul stripe. The Lady Jays knocked down 52.4 percent of their 63 attempts including 10 from beyond the arc; 14-of-18 free throws were counted by Tabor in their win. TC owned the glass on Thursday as they gobbled up 45 rebounds to McPherson's 18; the 'Dogs had an even nine and nine in terms of offensive and defensive boards. MC also netted 18 turnovers, 10 assists and seven steals in the loss.
Short ended with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting with 3-of-5 from range. Cami Engelbert added 10 for the Lady Bulldogs; she drained a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Aubrey Barton tallied nine points while Riley White led the team in rebounds with eight.
Scouting the Lady Bulldogs – all statistics are in conference play only: The Lady 'Dogs have scored an average of 61.2 points in their five KCAC games, knocking down a league-leading 41.5 percent of their field goals; they make just 29.9% from behind the arc and average a 7th ranked 5.2 makes from range. After a rough showing on the glass against Tabor, Mac now averages 35.6 rebounds a game; it was at 40.0 before Thursday. They net 13.0 assists and three blocks each time they play, ranking fourth and second, respectively; McPherson also steals away 6.2 a contest but turns it over 19.8 times. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs allow an average of 63.8 points per game and for the opponents to make 39.4 percent of their tries including 30.2% from range.
MC has a pair of road games next week as they travel to Ottawa, Kansas to face the Lady Braves on Thursday and then to Lindsborg for a matchup with the Swedes of Bethany College on Saturday.
Scouting Kansas Wesleyan
It has been a roller-coaster season for the Lady Coyotes as they've struggled to put more than a couple wins together but haven't lost more than two-straight either. They currently sit at 7-9 and are 2-3 in the conference; KWU has lost, then won, then lost, then won, then lost in their KCAC competitions thus far. The latest defeat came against a very talented Friends University squad by the score of 67-65.
After getting up early, the Lady 'Yotes had a turnover frenzy allowing the Falcons to get back into the game; Kansas Wesleyan trailed 32-20 at the break. In the second period, KWU got down by 20+ but then clawed their way back but were just short in the end, falling by two at 67-65. The Coyotes counted 21-of-52 from the floor which included a 7-of-22 showing from the three-point line; they also knocked in 16 of their 19 foul shots. Friends bucketed 45.9% of their shots, 28-of-61, with four from deep; a 7-of-11 night from the free throw line was recorded by the Falcons. FU won the rebounding battle 35-to-32. KWU tallied 19 turnovers, 10 assists and seven steals in their loss.
Leading the scorers for the Coyotes was Vanessa Kresin as she netted 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting with 8-of-9 foul shots falling. Alecia Smith made 6-of-14 from the field with a couple free throws for 15 points; she also gobbled up a team-high 11 rebounds. Also hitting double-digits was Christian Cassity who scored 14. The final player for KWU to hit the 10+ mark was Katie Pfeifer who knocked down 3-of-5 from the floor with a pair of three balls and a perfect 2-of-2 from the stripe.
Kansas Wesleyan averages 68.8 points each time they hit the court and have a negative 1.1 scoring margin; they cash in 39.8 percent of their field goals and make 29.5% from downtown, counting 5.6 a contest. The team does a nice job on the glass, pulling down over 40 rebounds a game but post a negative rebounding margin. They total 17.9 turnovers, 10.9 assists, 7.4 steals and 2.9 blocks an outing. In KCAC play, they net 66.2 points per game, shooting 39.4 percent from the floor; they are second in the conference in free throw percentage at 72.5 percent.
Kresin is the team's leading point-getter with an average of 17.6; she has drained 47% of her field goals and has a team-high 21 makes from three and 59 from the foul line. Smith is second on the list with her 14.9 a game total; she is the squad's leading rebounder, grabbing 8.1 a contest. Cassity also hits the double-digit mark on a regular basis with an average of 12.1.
The Coyotes host Bethany College on January 16th for their next contest.
