Lady Bulldogs Fall Just Short; Lose 71-63 to KWU

McPherson, Kan. – It was a very close contest between the MC women's basketball team and the Lady Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan and in the end, KWU came out victorious 71-63.  Mac is now 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
 
The 'Dogs got up early by as many as six but then a 13-2 run by the Coyotes put KWU in front by five at the 10:10 mark; Kansas Wesleyan would not trail until the final few seconds of the half.  MC went on a 6-0 run in the final couple minutes to take a 33-32 lead into the locker room.
 
McPherson made 10-of-22 from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes; they knocked down 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line and 10-of-14 from the charity stripe.  The 'Yotes also made 10 buckets but attempted24; they hit three from deep and 9-of-13 from the free throw line.  Mac's Aubrey Barton (Pratt, Kan.) led all scorers with her 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting with 3-of-4 foul shots dropping in.
 
In the second period, the Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to seven by the 14-minute point.  KWU scored 15 of the next 17 points to leapfrog over McPherson and take a six-point advantage.  Mac would not give up and tied it at 53-53 with just over five minutes to play.  Kansas Wesleyan quickly got ahead by double figures just a couple minutes later and then coasted to a 71-63 win.
 
MC attempted three more shots in the second half but cashed in on just nine, making 36 percent from the field (9-of-25); five of their eight three balls and 7-of-11 from the stripe did go in but it wasn't enough.  The Lady Coyotes made 10-of-26 including 4-of-8 from downtown; they shot 22 foul shots and made 15.
 
In the game, McPherson shot in 40.4% of their 47 field goals (19-of-47) and counted 8-of-16 from range; they were 17-of-25 from the line.  The 'Dogs totaled 32 rebounds but allowed KWU to have 37 including 16 offensive boards.  22 turnovers and 13 assists were netted by Mac, as were 15 steals.  20 of MC's total came from bench players while 34 were scored in the paint.
 
Barton closed out the night with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting with two from deep and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe; she also recorded three blocks as well as a double-double courtesy of her 10 rebounds, five on both ends of the floor.  Sunny Smart (Coffeeville, Okla.) knocked down a pair of threes, 4-of-6 foul shots and 1-of-4 from two-point range for her 12 while Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) tabulated 11 points with six coming from the free throw line; Brown also stole the ball away five times and had five rebounds.
 
The 'Dogs are on the road twice next week.  First up is a 6:00 p.m. (CT) showdown with the Ottawa University Braves in Ottawa, Kansas on January 16th.
