North Newton, Kan. – The ball just wouldn't find the basket late in the game for the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday as they dropped a 74-69 contest to Bethel College. MC currently sits at 7-15 for the season and 3-7 in the conference.
BC got up quick, leading by eight within the first five minutes; the Lady Threshers kept their lead for the next 10 minutes but were never able to push it to double figures. Mac took advantage of Bethel's inability to increase their lead and tied things up with four minutes to go in half. Foul calls increased in the final minutes and the period which closed out with the Threshers leading 33-32 on their home gym.
McPherson connected on 10-of-28 from the field in the opening minutes but made a measly 1-of-11 from behind the arc; they bucketed 11-of-14 from the free throw line. BC had a solid first half, making nearly 50% from the floor, 14-of-29; they knocked down just 1-of-9 from distance and 4-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The lead was traded in the first couple possessions of the second period but then MC put together 10-straight points to go ahead by double-digits midway through the half. Bethel battled back and took over just a few minutes later and would stay ahead for the rest of the contest. The Lady 'Dogs kept things interesting, never being out of reach but couldn't overtake BC. The Threshers held off a late surge, preserving their win, 74-69.
The Bulldogs improved their shooting percentage to 44.4 percent in the second period, converting 12 of their 27 field goals but made zero from the three-point line on five tries; the team cashed in on a poor 56% from the foul line, making 13-of-23. Bethel stayed pretty consistent from the floor, draining 12-of-28 with 2-of-4 from long range; they had a very good performance from the stripe, hitting 15-of-18.
A 22-of-55 night was logged by the 'Dogs as they nailed 40% from the floor; they were 1-of-16 from deep and 24-of-37. They pulled in 37 rebounds, two less than the Threshers, with 17 being on the offensive side of the court. 16 turnovers, 12 assists, six steals and one block were recorded by Mac in their loss.
Aubrey Barton (Pratt, Kan.) scored a game-high 23 on 6-of-11 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the stripe; she also netted 11 rebounds and the squad's lone block.
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) tabbed 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting with 6-of-8 free throws dropping through; the sophomore led the team in assists with four. The final MC player to hit double-digits was
Cami Engelbert (Beloit, Kan.) as she tallied 11 on 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-7 from the stripe; she pulled down seven rebounds.
