McPherson, Kan. – Following a victory on Wednesday, the McPherson College women's basketball team will look to keep that good feeling going when they travel to Sterling, Kansas to compete with the Sterling College Warriors on February 1
st; start time is set for 5:00 p.m. (CT)
Mac's most recent contest came against a struggling University of Saint Mary squad on Wednesday. The 'Dogs played one of their best first halves of the season, scoring 39 of the final 47 points of the period; they took a 41-16 lead into the locker room. MC hit on 14-of-31 from the floor with 4-of-13 going in from behind the arc; an impressive 9-of-10 showing from the stripe helped McPherson not waste free points. The Spires connected on 5-of-26 in the opening half with two coming from deep; they made four of their six foul shots.
It wasn't a pretty second period for either team as sloppy play led to a low scoring final 20 minutes; Mac's lead reached 30 points but hovered in the mid-20s for most of the period. The clock stuck zeroes with McPherson taking the near 20-point win at 64-45. The Bulldogs saw 8-of-21 field goals go in, including five from behind the three-point line; the team only shot three free throws in the second half, making two. Saint Mary was 7-of-29 in the final period with an ugly 3-of-21 coming from long range; they counted 12-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Mac shot 42.3 percent for the game, making 22-of-52 from the field including 9-of-24 from downtown, 37.5%; they made all but two of their free throws, going 11-of-13. The squad outrebounded the Spires by 10 with 43 total boards, 11 coming on the offensive side of the floor. The team posted an even 15 assists and 15 turnovers as well as eight steals and five blocks. 31 of the total for McPherson were scored by bench players and 35 points were netted in the paint.
Bailey Brown was the leading scorer for MC as she put in 4-of-7 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line; she also tabbed six rebounds, three assists and a team leading five steals. Chandler Short knocked in four of her eight field goal tries, putting two in from deep as well as going 2-of-2 from the line for 12; she logged three assists and four rebounds in the team's win. Callie Atkins closed out the night with 10 points, missing her two field goals and one free throw attempt in the second half; she was 4-of-8 for the night with a pair from deep. Bre Gillespie pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, scored seven, and had three assists.
Scouting the McPherson women: The Lady 'Dogs are hitting just over the 60-point mark on a regular basis, averaging 60.4 a night; their scoring margin is a negative 3.87. 36 percent of the team's field goals are going in with just 28.1% from distance finding the bottom of the net; they make 5.3 from behind the arc each time out. 39.9 rebounds are tabbed by Mac every game as are 18.7 turnovers, 12.5 assists, 7.9 steals and 2.3 blocks. Through their 11 conference games, the Bulldogs score 61.27 an outing, cashing in on 38.2 from the floor; they allow 64.27 and have a defensive field goal percentage of 39.8. The team leads the KCAC in free throw percentage with a 72.5% conversion rate. 35.46 rebounds are pulled down a game; they also net 12.73 assists, 7.64 steals, and 2.82 blocks.
MC will travel to No. 21 Friends University on February 6th for their next contest; tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Scouting Sterling
Following an eight-game skid, the Lady Warriors have won three of their last five and are currently riding a two-game win-streak, defeating Bethany last Saturday at home, 80-61, and most recently the Threshers on Wednesday in North Newton, 86-71.
Sterling started the game strong against BC, getting up by near double-digits early. Bethel fought back but didn't have the fire power allowing the Warriors to amass a 40-19 lead at the break. The second half went back-and-forth with SC not increasing their lead and the Threshers not cutting very deeply into their deficit. As the final buzzer sounded, Sterling claimed a 15-point victory. The Lady Warriors made 20-of-50 on the night with 4-of-15 going down from distance; they made a good chunk of their points from the free throw line as they converted on 42-of-51. 46 rebounds, 16 coming on the offensive side of the court, were tallied by SC; they also netted 20 turnovers, six assists and five steals.
Hailey Davis led the Warriors in scoring with her 24 points; she went just 3-of-13 from the floor, missing all five from deep, but drained an incredible 18-of-19 from the line. She was followed by Allie Faul who scored 20 on 4-of-6 from the field and 9-of-12 from the stripe. Lori Dauer and Kelsey Strobel each got over the 10-point hump with 15 and 13, respectively; Dauer also claimed 17 rebounds in her team's victory.
On the year, Sterling averages 70.3 points a night, bucketing 38.1 percent from the floor with 30.4 dropping in from distance; they net 5.7 three balls each time out and have made 113 on the year. The team does a nice job from the charity stripe, totaling a 72.3 percentage in their 20 games. 36.3 rebounds, 16.9 turnovers, 11.7 assists, 5.9 steals and 1.9 blocks are tabbed a game for SC. In their conference contests, the Warriors count 62.2 points while allowing 67.4; they are making 38.6 percent from the field and 29.2 from behind the arc. They sit last in the KCAC in defensive field goal percentage and defensive three-point percentage at 42.9 and 35.7 percent, respectively. The squad pulls in 34.8 rebounds while logging 12.5 assists, 5.7 steals and 2.2 blocks.
Davis currently leads the team in points per game with 13.0; she is making 44.4 percent from the floor and has also recorded a team-high 26 steals on the year. Forward Dauer is next on the list with her 12.8 a game average; she counts 49.7 percent from the field, rebounds a team-high 6.9 boards, and has played in 623 total minutes, tops of the Warriors. Strobel is scoring 12 points a night and has started in each of the 14 games she's played in.
For their next competition, Sterling will host Tabor on February 6th.
