McPherson, Kan. – It was a windy day when McPherson and Southwestern College met on Saturday; of the five goals scored, four came with the wind at the backs of the attacking team. Fortunately for Mac, they were with the wind for the final 45 and overcame a one-goal deficit, twice, to take down the Lady Builders 3-2. The 'Dogs are now 5-11-1 on the year and 3-5 in the conference; the team needs to either tie or win next week when they host Bethany College to be eligible for the postseason tournament.
The Moundbuilders had the wind in the opening period and held most of the possession but were only able to get past the McPherson defense once, scoring in the 41st minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break. In the second, MC's Rhea Vale scored in the 69th to tie it up. Shortly thereafter, SWC went back on top 2-1 with 25 minutes to play. Backed into a corner, the Bulldogs fought for the final minutes and were rewarded with a goal from Cydney Lewis in the 78th minute and another from Amy Stockton off a Jessica Dominguez pass with just nine minutes remaining. The Lady Builders could not muster another shot in with time running out and Mac held on for the 3-2 victory.
McPherson took just two attempts at the goal in the opening 45 but came back and shot 11 at the SWC keeper in the second; seven total tries went on frame. Both Lewis and Haley Anderson took three shots to lead the team; Lewis put two of hers on target.
Caitlyn Blagrave saved five balls and allowed two goals in her first win of the season.
It's do or die time for MC next week as they host the Bethany College Swedes on November 4th at 5:30 p.m. (CT) As stated earlier, McPherson needs to either win or tie in order to have a chance at making it into postseason.
