McPherson, Kan. – For their annual Pink Out Night, McPherson College women's basketball will face the Tabor College Lady Blue Jays; start time for the February 8
th contest is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT)
The Lady 'Dogs are coming off a game against Friends that was full of MC first half turnovers, 20, and a lack of makes,two. The Lady Falcons capitalized on the miscues of McPherson, getting a 42-11 lead heading into halftime. Mac was 2-of-14 from the floor, missing all seven tries from downtown; they cashed in on 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Friends scored on 16-of-46 with 5-of-16 dropping from distance; they went 5-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The final period started with the Falcons jumping to a 40-point advantage; MC stayed down 29 or more points for the entire second half. JV players from both teams entered the game to play the final 15 minutes. Friends closed out the night with a 93-51 win. Mac dropped in 13-of-24 in the last 20 minutes including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc; they made 10-of-15 from the foul line. The Lady Falcons put 17-of-32 field goals in the hoop with 7-of-11 going down from range; they also made 10-of-18 from the stripe.
The 'Dogs ended the competition with a 50% shooting percentage as 11-of-22 shots fell through for the game; they made 4-of-16, 25%, from distance and 17-of-25 from the foul line. 39 total boards were netted by McPherson, 15 coming on the offensive end of the court. Mac logged 25 turnovers, nine assists, four blocks and three steals in their loss; FU scored 28 points off of the Bulldogs' turnovers.
Bailey Brown led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points coming off 5-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe; she also tabbed three rebounds. Aubrey Barton made three of her six field goals and both free throws for eight points, second on the team. Whitney Jefferson scored four points, all from the foul stripe, rebounded four balls, all defensive, and dished out four assists.
Scouting McPherson: The 8-17 Bulldogs are averaging 60.2 points an outing while making 36.2 percent from the field; they tab just over five three balls a night, shooing in 27.7%. The squad averages 39.4 rebounds through their 25 competitions as well as 19.0 turnovers, 12.2 assists, 7.8 steals and 2.3 blocks. When playing conference teams, Mac scores 60.6 while allowing 66.9 points per game; they shoot in 38.4 percent from the floor and 73.1% from the charity stripe which leads the KCAC. The club pulls down 35.3 rebounds each contest while tallying 12.0 assists, 7.38 steals and 2.85 blocks.
The Lady 'Dogs will next take it to the road on February 13th when they face the Kansas Wesleyan University Lady Coyotes; tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
Scouting Tabor
The 15-8, 10-3 Lady 'Jays will head into Saturday's contest in the midst of a four-game winning streak with their latest conquest coming against the Sterling College Lady Warriors.
TC, playing as the guest team, came out and took a first half lead of 40-32 into the locker room; they closed the night out by holding Sterling to just 21 points, scoring 34 themselves for a 74-53 win. The Blue Jays put 28 of their 64 field goals through the hoop which included 7-of-20 from behind the three-point line; they bucketed 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. SC knocked in 20-of-58 with four of their 12 tries from downtown finding the bottom of the net; they scored on 9-of-13 from the foul stripe. Tabor pulled down 47 rebounds compared to the Warriors' 33; TC also logged 16 assists, nine turnovers, five steals and a block in their win.
Nikki Lewis scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-11 from the floor with a pair of three balls and free throws; the five-foot senior also recorded six rebounds and seven assists. Next on the list was Janelle Rust who put in 5-of-6 from the field and 1-of-2 from the stripe. Mallory Zuercher netted 11 points, seeing 4-of-9 field goals make their way in. The final Blue Jay to make it into double-digits scoring was Katelin Horstrick as she tabbed 10 on 4-of-5 from the court and 2-of-2 from the foul line. Tena Loewen tallied 12 rebounds to go along with her six points scored.
This season, Tabor is putting an average of 71.5 points per game on the scoreboard; they knock down 41.9 percent of their field goals including 33.7 percent from range. The team has a positive scoring margin of 7.8 and also records 37.8 rebounds a contest. On average, the Lady 'Jays turn the ball over 15.8 times, dish out 14.4 assists, steal away 8.0 balls, and swat 1.4 shot attempts a night. In their KCAC matchups, Tabor is second in offensive scoring and defensive scoring with 71.33 and 56.25, respectively. They lead the conference in three-point percentage at 35.1 percent and make a league second highest 42.7 percent from the entire court. The team is grabbing 38.4 rebounds as well as 14.67 assists and eight steals each time they play.
The top scorer to this point in the season is Rust as she nets 13.1 a night; she's made 100 total field goals on the year with 31 dropping from downtown, third on the team. Tonisha Dean is second on the scoring list with a 12.4 points per game average; she is the team leader in free throws made and second in total rebounds with 109. Point guard Lewis is putting in 9.7 points an outing while producing 6.773 assists a game which puts her first in the NAIA D-II; her 149 total dimes on the year rank her fourth in the Nation. Zuercher is right behind Lewis in points per contest with 9.6; she is the top three-point shooter for the Blue Jays, making 36 on the season.
TC will be back at home next Thursday as they host the Lady Braves of Ottawa University.
