Olathe, Kan. – Playing for the first time in what seems like forever, it took the Bulldogs a while to shake the rust off; McPherson dropped the first game 6-0 but bounced back and won 5-4 in the second. The 'Dogs move to 3-10 on the year.
Game 1 – at MidAmerica Nazarene – L 6-0
The opening game of the series made it apparent that it had been over 10 days since the team's last competition; Mac failed to score a single run in the first contest and allowed six, losing 6-0.
Tom Potter (Dayton, Minn.) and Seth Davenport (McPherson, Kan.) were the lone 'Dogs to log a hit in game one; Jordan Slaton (Dodge City, Kan.) got hit by a pitch for his sole trip to first base.
Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) pitched the first five innings, allowing all six runs; he tabulated eight hits surrendered, one walk awarded and threw three strikeouts. Colter Streck (Woodland Park, Colo.) finished out the outing, throwing to three batters; he forced two fly outs and one strikeout.
Game 2 – at MidAmerica Nazarene – W 5-4
In the second contest, Mac once again dug themselves into a hole, trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth inning; fortunately for the Bulldogs, things started going their way as they put up a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. McPherson allowed one run to the Pioneers in the fifth but shut them out in the final two innings to split the series with a 5-4 win.
The bats began going in game two as the 'Dogs recorded nine knocks of the ball; they also reached first four times on walks. Austin Russell (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) totaled three hits in his four at bats to lead the team; Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) put two balls into play and four other MC players logged one hit. Potter drew a pair of walks to go along with his hit, making it aboard three times. Senior Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) tabbed a team-high two RBI while Slaton scored a couple of times to lead the Bulldogs.
Starting things at the mound was Scott Hughes (Albuquerque, N.M.) who went five innings before being relieved; he gave up three earned runs, one unearned run and five hits while striking out three, forcing seven ground outs and three fly outs. Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) moved from his short stop position to close things out for Mac, throwing the final two innings which earned him the save.
It's now conference time for McPherson as they have their first KCAC game of the 2014 season; the 'Dogs host Kansas Wesleyan University on March 14th with game one of the doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m. (CT)
