Box Score 2 McPherson, Kan. – Scheduled to be two seven-inning softball games between McPherson College and Bethany College turned into just 11 innings of competition as game one was decided after five with the Swedes coming out on top 8-0 and the second contest was called short due to weather with BC walking away with a 6-5 win.
Game 1 – vs. Bethany College – L 8-0 – Five Innings
The opening contest of the day was one where nothing was going McPherson's way as Bethany dropped in eight runs in the first three innings; following a pair of scoreless frames, the Swedes took game one 8-0 as the run-rule was enforced.
Only two hits and one walk were recorded by Mac in their first outing; Jenna Kaiser (Billings, Mont.), who also took the pitching duties, tallied one hit as did Whitney Miller (Valley Center, Kan.) with Emily Davis (McPherson, Kan.) being granted the base on balls.
Kaiser threw the complete five-inning game, surrendering all BC's runs though only three were earned; she walked three and struck out one in her time at the mound.
Game 2 – vs. Bethany College – L 6-5 – Six Innings – Weather
Things were looking grim for the Dirt 'Dogs in the second contest as they allowed three runs on three solo homeruns in the second inning to get down early. MC scored a pair in the fourth with a two-run shot coming off McKenna Deckard's bat to inch closer but three more runs tallied by Bethany in fifth shifted the momentum back into the Swedes' favor; fortunately for the Bulldogs, they scored three of their own in the bottom of the inning to move within one run again. In the sixth, Mac had a chance to tie things up but left runners on so they headed into the seventh still down 6-5. BC had a hitting frenzy in the seventh inning but due to lightning, the game was called and none of their efforts can be recorded as the game is reverted back to the last complete inning; the Swedes didn't go home empty handed as they won 6-5.
Hitting went much better for MC in the second game as they tabulated 10 hits and earned one walk. Amanda Darrow (Jasper, Mo.) logged three knocks of the ball in three at bats and scored twice herself. Kaiser and Miller each recorded two hits; Deckard (Hutchinson, Kan.) not only hit one over the fence but also got aboard once with the team's lone walk.
Senior Kaila Atkinson got the starting nod for the first time this season; she lasted four and a third, allowing five earned runs off of six hits. Mallory Fowler was brought in to finish up the fifth inning but was unable to produce an out, getting relieved after just 12 pitches. Kaiser closed out the game for Mac, recording no runs, no hits and one strikeout in the five batters faced.
McPherson will stay at home for their next competition as they host Kansas Wesleyan University on April 5th; the KCAC doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Wall Park.
