Box Score 4 West Palm Beach, Fla. – It was a great tournament for the MC volleyball team down in Florida as they went 3-1 in the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Labor Day Volleyfest hosted by Northwood University over Labor Day weekend. McPherson won their first three contests without losing a set but fell to the host school 3-0 in their final competition.
In an early morning game on Friday, Mac had a rough start but pulled through for a 25-23 set one win. They backed that up with a commanding 25-14 victory and then held off Ave Maria University in the final set 25-23. Renee Fredrickson, Taryn Lee and Cortlyne HuppeHuppe each had eight kills in the match, Phoebe Barton recorded 24 assists and libero Emily Warner logged 24 digs.
The second match of the day was against Edward Waters College. This was another three-set contest for MC as they won 25-14, 25-11 and 25-20. Huppe led with her nine kills, Barton had 18 assists and Warner totaled 17 digs in the quick match.
After some fun in the sun, the Lady 'Dogs came back on Saturday and took on Concordia College of Alabama. Three-straight sets and three-straight 25 points on the scoreboard for McPherson as they won 25-21, 25-17 and 25-15. Huppe had a season-high 15 kills, while Lee matched her eight from the previous day. Barton recorded a career-high 31 assists and Warner led the team with her 16 digs.
The streak had to end somewhere and unfortunately it came in the final match of the weekend which was against Northwood University of Florida. The Bulldogs were caught off guard and lost the first set 25-9; still reeling, MC dropped the second 25-13. In what turned out to be the last set, McPherson put up a fight and led most of the way before losing 25-22. Three Mac players had five kills, Barton set 20 assists and Warner tallied 17 digs.
For the tournament, Huppe put down 37 balls on 80 tries; she also was in on seven total blocks, four solo and three assisted. Barton totaled 93 assists and also had two kills and 18 digs. Warner recorded 74 digs and had four kills from her back row position.
The 'Dogs have their first home conference match of the year against Sterling College on Wednesday, September 3 with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. (CT); varsity begins at 7:00. SC is 6-2 on the year and will be coming off a 2-2 showing at the Missouri Valley Invitational.
