McPherson, Kan. – The 2015-16 conference season will begin this week for MC women's basketball. The team is set to travel to Winfield, Kansas to take on the Southwestern College Moundbuilders; start time is set for 6:00 p.m. (CT)
Scouting McPherson
The Lady 'Dogs are 1-5 this season, playing against some very talented competition. Mac is averaging 67.2 points a night while making 40.5% from the field which is the second best in the KCAC; the team nets 6.0 threes a game, making 29.5% from deep. MC pulls in 40.5 boards each time out and have a positive rebounding margin of 4.83. On average, the Bulldogs tally 20.0 turnovers, 14.7 assists, 8.8 steals and a conference leading 4.33 blocks each contest.
Senior captain Bailey Brown leads the way in scoring with her 14.8 average; she has hit 25 field goals, eight coming from distance, along with 31-of-36 free throws. Brown's shooting percentage of 51% is a team-high. Ashton Bruner is next on the list with a 10.0 ppg average; she is averaging a double-double with her 10.0 boards a night. Sunny Smart is close to a 10-point average as she nets 9.3 each time out; she has made a team-high 11 three-point field goals.
Mac stays on the road for their next contest as they travel to North Newton, Kansas to face the Bethel College Threshers; they are slated for a 5:00 p.m. start.
Scouting Southwestern
The Moundbuilders are having a rough season so far. The team, under direction of first-year interim head coach Whitney Corley, has posted a 1-4 non-conference record. The lone win for SWC came against Southwestern Christian University in October.
There are two common opponents for Southwestern and McPherson; both have played and lost to Saint Gregory's University and Haskell Indian Nations University.
Through their five games, SWC averages 60.4 points a night and have a negative scoring margin of 13.0. The team shoots in a KCAC-worst 33.8 percent overall and 22.8 percent from the floor; they count 70% from the charity stripe. Rebounding hasn't been a problem for the Lady Builders as they pull in 41.6 a game and have a rebounding margin of 2.40. Southwestern turns the ball over 20.4 times a night while stealing back just seven; they average 11.2 assists and 3.2 blocks every time the hit the court.
Sophomore Jordyn Miller has upped her play from a year ago. The forward leads SWC in scoring with her 11.6 average; she has made 22 field goals and a team-high 12-of-15 free throws. The Wichita native also leads the way in rebounding with 7.0 a game. Jana Reichenberger is close to a 10-point average but has only played in the team's last two contests. Catherine Cranmer averages six points and six boards a night for the Moundbuilders.
A trip to Sterling College is next for Southwestern; the game will come on November 21st in Sterling, Kansas.
