McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women's basketball team will have an inter-county rivalry game this Thursday as they travel to Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Tipoff for the junior varsity is at 2:00 p.m. (CT) with varsity starting at 6:00.
Scouting McPherson
The Lady 'Dogs are 3-8 on the year and after starting the conference season with a 2-0 record have lost three-straight to go to 2-3 in the KCAC. Two of their league losses have been on last-second shots with the most recent one coming against Friends this past Saturday.
Last Time Out – It was a turnover heavy contest for the Bulldogs as they gave the ball away 30 times in the 40-minute game. After an even first period McPherson took a slim lead in the second but a run by Friends to close out the half gave the Falcons a 35-30 lead. The 'Dogs struggled in the third quarter, tallying 12 turnovers and 11 points; the team trailed by 10 heading into the final period. A Mac run midway through the quarter put the Bulldogs in prime position to take the lead which they did in the closing seconds. However, a running layup by Friends with less than two ticks left gave the game to the Falcons 65-64. McPherson went 20-of-45 for the game but shot a poor 6.3% from deep, 1-of-16; they made 23-of-30 free throw attempts. The team pulled in a stellar 48 rebounds with 11 offensive boards; they also tabbed 30 turnovers, eight assists, three steals, and a block in the loss.
Ashton Bruner scored a career-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting with 4-of-5 free throws falling through; she also grabbed 16 rebounds with four on the offensive end of the court. Bailey Brown netted 18 for the Bulldogs on 5-of-6 field goals and 8-of-10 foul shots; she pulled in four rebounds as well. Sunny Smart scored nine and had six rebounds, four off the offensive glass.
Year at a Glance – McPherson is scoring 66.8 points a night, fifth in the league, and they allow 68.8 for a negative 2.0 scoring average, also fifth. The team nets 40.5 percent from the floor, second best in the KCAC, but make just 26% from behind the arc, second worst; their 70.1 free throw percentage is third highest in the conference. The team pulls down 40.6 boards a night and have a positive rebounding margin of 5.8; they also tally 20.3 turnovers, 11.8 steals, 8.8 assists, and 3.5 blocks on average.
Brown leads the way in scoring with her 15.6 points a night; she has made a team-high 47 field goals along with 68 free throws. The senior brings in 4.7 rebounds each time out and she is second on the team in steals with 20. Bruner tallies 11.7 points on average; she has netted 46 field goals and leads the team in rebounding average at 8.6. Georgia Smart tallies 8.1 per game while hauling in 4.6 boards with most coming off the offensive glass.
The 'Dogs will stay on the road for their next outing as they take on Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas on December 12th; JV is at 1:00 p.m. while varsity is slated for a 5:00 start.
Scouting Bethany
The Swedes are 3-7 on the year and are 0-4 in the KCAC; their four conference losses are to the current top-four teams in the league, all of which are nationally ranked. The most recent defeat for Bethany came at the hands of Oklahoma Wesleyan University 73-56 in Oklahoma.
Last Time Out – The game looked to be a close one as the teams stayed tight, heading into the second with OKWU leading 20-19. Both teams struggled in the second, putting the halftime score at 31-28 in favor of the Eagles. The third is when Oklahoma Wesleyan really separated themselves with a 24-11 period. The fourth was back to being even, 18 points apiece, but the home team held on for the 18-point win. Bethany shoot very poorly from the field, making just 27% of their 63 field goals; they were 4-of-19 from three-point land but hit 18-of-24 from the foul stripe. The Swedes got killed on the glass, 54-to-29, and allowed 18 offensive boards to OKWU. Bethany also tallied 13 turnovers, eight steals, seven assists, and three blocks.
Paige Stewart led the BC scoring with her 15 bench points; she hit 7-of-15 field goals with one from deep. Adriane Davis was one-point back on a 4-of-15 shooting night; she also hit all four free throws to get her to 14 points. Dominique Davis was the final double figure scorer with 13 points on 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the foul line; she grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as well.
Year at a Glance – The Lady Swedes are seventh in the KCAC in scoring at 63.1 points a night; they allow 65.5 which is sixth. The team drops in 36.5% from the floor with 30.3% of their three-point tries falling through; they make 67.8% from the stripe. Their defense is second in the conference in field goal percentage as they hold their opponents to just 36.8% from inside the arc and 26.5% from behind. The team grabs a league second-high 40.9 boards each time out along with 18.5 turnovers, 11.9 assists, 8.1 steals and 3.1 blocks.
A. Davis is the lone double-digit scorer for Bethany at 15.2 points a night; she leads the way in field goals, 45-of-133, three-point buckets, 19-of-57, and free throws, 43-of-52. Joleen Chanco, who hasn't played in a few games, is next with an 8.9 average; she has grabbed a team-high 48 rebounds through her seven games. D. Davis nets 7.1 on average and also tallies 4.8 boards each time out.
A home game against Sterling College is next for BC.
