Hillsboro, Kan. – The McPherson College women's basketball team dropped a 67-46 contest to Tabor College on Thursday night; the 'Dogs could not overcome their 19-point first half performance. The loss moves MC to 4-21 on the year and 3-10 in the KCAC.
The opening half was very low scoring for both teams. TC held the lead most of the way but the game stayed within a couple baskets until the final couple minutes of the period; the opening 20 was very physical but not a lot of fouls were called on either team. The Lady 'Jays took a 30-19 advantage into the locker room. Mac shot in just 8-of-32 field goals, 25%, and went 2-of-8 from behind the arc; they dropped in 1-of-3 from the foul line. Tabor scored on 11-of-32 from the field with 3-of-10 coming from range; they shot in 5-of-8 free throws.
In the second, after a back-and-forth first few minutes, McPherson's shooting woes returned and unfortunately TC found their grove and increased their lead to 20 with nine minutes remaining. The Bulldogs finally started hitting but it was too little, too late as they fell 67-46. In the final 20 minutes, Mac knocked down 10-of-27 and watched 4-of-11 threes find the bottom of the net. The Bluejays connected on an even 50%, 14-of-28, with a solid 5-of-8 from distance.
MC ended the game making 18-of-59 from the floor including 6-of-19 from deep; they shot just seven free throws and were able to make four. They were outrebounded 47-32 but did grab 10 offensive boards. They tallied 16 turnovers, 10 in the first half, as well as nine assists, three blocks, and just one steal. 18 points came in the paint while 14 were scored by bench players.
Sunny Smart, who scored six of the final eight points, finished the game with a team-high 15; she was 6-of-10 from the floor with 3-of-5 threes dropping. No other Bulldog made it past the six-point mark.
The 'Dogs will host Sterling College on February 7th for their next contest; tipoff for JV is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT) while the varsity will begin at 5:00. It is Think Pink Night in the Sport Center so be sure to wear your pink!
