Oklahoma City, Okla. – In their third win in as many games, the MC women's soccer team found a way to win, taking down Mid-America Christian University on Saturday afternoon 2-1 in overtime. The 'Dogs are now 3-1 on the year.
Both squads started the match strong, putting multiple shots on frame in the opening minutes. MACU took seven tries in the first 45 and were able to put two on target while the Bulldogs attempted six shots at goal, two were saved by Mid-America Christian. At the midway point of the match, the score still sat at 0-0.
The first part of the second half was played mainly in the middle of the field with neither team gaining the upper edge. As the contest drew to a close however, the Evangels started pushing forward and unloaded at the MC goal. Sheryl Evans kept the net empty for her Bulldogs and on a counter attack, McPherson was awarded a penalty kick with just 6:30 left to play. Belen Villegas put one into the upper part of the net to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. MACU fired right back and was able to sneak one into the corner of the goal to force an overtime period.
In OT, Cydney Lewis came up big as she slotted in a Kayla Faust pass to give the Bulldogs the "Golden Goal" and the win, 2-1.
Mac took 11 total shots in the match and saw seven go between the pipes. Lewis led the team in shots taken with five, three of which were on target including the overtime goal. Villegas took three attempts at goal, putting her second on the team.
Evans had a very solid game for the Lady 'Dogs as she tallied eight saves and the one goal allowed in just over 97 minutes of play.
MC will hit the field again on Tuesday, September 22 as they host Manhattan Christian College at 7:30 p.m. (CT) at McPherson Stadium.
