Leavenworth, Kan. – It's been a long time coming for the MC volleyball squad as they were finally able to put three sets together and took down the University of Saint Mary 3-1 on Wednesday night. The victory is the team's first KCAC win of the year and hopefully the start of good things to come.
The Lady 'Dogs came out firing in the opening set as they got up big and stayed ahead. USM tried to push back but the blockers of McPherson shut them down as Mac took the first set 25-15.
In the second, the teams traded points for nearly the entire set but the Bulldogs surged at the right moment, winning the set 25-22.
McPherson started slow in the third set, falling behind early and playing catchup most of the way. A late push by the Bulldogs sent the set into extras but Saint Mary came away with the win 26-24.
Much like the first set of the match, the fourth was all McPherson. The 'Dogs had a solid attack from the get-go and easily won 25-13.
Senior Taryn Lee led the team in kills and total points with 10 and 14, respectively; she tabbed six blocks in the match. Jessica Sanders tabbed nine kills and hit a team-high .467 percentage; the junior transfer logged four blocks as well.
Rhianna Smith topped the assist list with 20; she also had six. Maci Schlehuber was close behind with 17 assists.
Mac accrued 70 digs for the match and libero Emily Warner recorded 22 of them. Second on the team was Molly Kelley with her 12.
It's a non-conference triangular on Saturday for MC as they take on Central Christian College and the College of the Ozarks on the Tigers' campus. The match with CCC is set for 11:00 a.m. (CT) with the C of O contest slated for 1:00 p.m.
