NORTH NEWTON, Kan. --- The McPherson College women's soccer team tied a season-high with four goals in a 4-1 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Bethel College at Thresher Stadium.
The Bulldogs (6-4, 2-3 KCAC) wasted little time getting on the board as
Danielle Kakebeen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) scored off an assist from
Dina Der Vartanian (Sierra Madre, Calif.) in the seventh minute.
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif.) added goals in the 33rd and 37th minutes to extend the McPherson lead to 3-0 at halftime. The first was unassisted while Kakebeen was credited with a helper on the second.
Kayla Faust (Manhattan, Kan.) scored in the 73rd minute off an assist from
Allie Hicks (Bedford, Texas) for her first tally of the year.
The Threshers (3-8, 0-5 KCAC) avoided the shutout courtesy of an own goal by the Bulldogs in the 83rd minute after a ball richocheted off McPherson defender
Heather Diamond (Lake Forest, Calif.) and into the goal past Bulldogs reserve keeper
Abigail Jantz-Allison (McPherson, Kan.).
McPherson held an 18-3 advantage in shots, including 12-2 in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Kakebeen finished with a game-high four shots, including three on goal, while Diamond, Der Vartanian and Guerrero each had three shots.
Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) played a scoreless first half before being relieved by Jantz, who was credited with a pair of saves. It was the first time this season that Evans had played less than the full 90 minutes.
Kelsey Peterson, Breeta Moe and Araeleigha Marcy each had one shot for Bethel. Kimberley McLaughlin made seven saves in defeat for the Threshers.
"Our ladies put a nice solid game together," said head coach
Doug Quint. "In possession, we created some good chances and scored a couple really nice goals. Defensively, we stayed organized throughout and limited their chances."
The Bulldogs return home Saturday to host Oklahoma Wesleyan University (6-3-1, 4-2 KCAC) under the lights at McPherson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
