NORTH NEWTON, Kan. --- The McPherson College men's soccer team recorded its fourth shutout of the season with a 3-0 blanking of Bethel College in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) game Wednesday at Thresher Stadium.
The Bulldogs (8-3-1, 3-2 KCAC) outshot the Threshers (2-9, 1-4 KCAC), 8-0, in the first half with
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) and
David Mwinga (Santa Rosa, Calif.) tallying goals. Torres' goal came in the 27th minute on a strike that found the upper right corner. Mwinga's came in the 39th minute on breakaway initiated by a service from
Brayam De La Cruz (Bellevue, Idaho).
McPherson head coach
Doug Quint emptied his bench in the second half and ended up with a commanding 9-1 advantage in corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
The game's final goal came in the 67th minute when the Threshers allowed an own goal.
Mwinga finished with a game-high four shots, while Torres and
Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland) added two apiece.
Aaron Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) got the start in goal for McPherson, making zero saves in 45 minutes.
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany) entered in relief to start the second half and was credited with one save.
"We had a complete performance tonight," said Quint. "Defensively, we were disciplined and it was nice to earn a clean sheet. Offensively, we were calm in possession and took what their defense gave us. I felt we needed to be a little more dynamic in the final third but that is something we can address in training."
The Bulldogs face a huge challenge Saturday evening when top-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University (11-0-1, 5-0 KCAC) comes to McPherson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.
