McPHERSON, Kan. --- The McPherson College women's soccer team improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) with a 4-1 win over Sterling College on Saturday at The Kennel.
The Bulldogs struck twice in the first eight minutes as
Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) beat Warriors starting goalkeeper Madeline Sutton in the fourth minute, then assisted on a goal by
Astrid Alvarez (Flagstaff, Ariz.) in the eighth minute.
Sterling (4-5, 0-2 KCAC) cut the deficit in half in the 19th minute when Jessica Barton beat McPherson keeper
Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) on a penalty kick in the lower right corner.
Lewis added a second goal in the 58th minute and
Dina Der Vartanian (Sierra Madre, Calif.) closed out the scoring by connecting on a direct free kick in the 63rd minute.
McPherson finished the game with a 21-18 advantage in shots overall, including a 9-5 lead in shots on goal. Lewis led all players with seven shots, including two on goal. Der Vartanian had four shots, Alvarez and
Heather Diamond (Lake Forest, Calif.) each added three.
Evans picked up the win in goal, making four saves and allowing just the PK in 90 minutes.
Gabrielle Baca and Olivia Cozzoni led Sterling with four shots apiece. Sutton made three saves and allowed all four goals in nearly 65 minutes in goal. Hannah French played the final 25:19, making a pair of saves.
"Our ladies stayed organized defensively and were better going forward today," said head coach Doug Quint. "This was a good result for us against a well-coached team."
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 5 with a 5 p.m. match at KCAC rival Tabor in Hillsboro, Kansas.
