HILLSBORO, Kan. --- The McPherson College men's soccer team overcame a sixth-minute goal by Tabor College's Bansyn Felty to top the Bluejays, 3-1, in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.
Tabor (2-7, 0-3 KCAC) grabbed a piece of early momentum after Felty took a feed from Robert Talamantez and sent a shot past McPherson starting keeper
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany).
The Bulldogs (7-2-1, 2-1 KCAC) registered the equalizer just eight minutes later, however, as
Brian Cano (Bakersfield, Calif.) took an
Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif.) corner kick and beat Derrick Eszlinger for the goal.
McPherson grabbed the lead in the 40th minute when Quentin Francis was booked for an infraction in the box.
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) delivered on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead at the break.
Sean Morris (Cambridge, England) made it 3-1 McPherson with an unassisted tally in the 54th minute.
The teams were limited on their shots in the second half with each team being credited with four.Â
Officially, Tabor outshot McPherson, 9-8, overall, but only one -- Felty's sixth-minute goal -- found the frame. By contrast, the Bulldogs were credited with six shots on goal. McPherson also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lamparter played the first half in goal for McPherson, allowing a goal. He also blocked a shot but did not officially make a save in the contest.
Aaron Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) entered the game after halftime and did not see a shot on goal.
Felty led all players with three shots for Tabor, while Torres and
Brayam De La Cruz (Bellevue, Idaho) had two each to lead the Bulldogs.
"We did a good job tonight of keeping our composure when the game began to be impacted by things that were out of our control," said head coach
Doug Quint. "This was a nice result for us as we continue to improve."
McPherson continues KCAC play Saturday when it hosts Friends University at 3 p.m. at The Kennel.
