McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's soccer team closed out the regular season in style with a 4-0 win over York College on Tuesday at McPherson Stadium.
The Bulldogs (10-6, 6-5 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) held a commanding 27-4 advantage in shots, including a 15-2 edge in shots on goal, and had seven corner kicks compared to zero for York (1-16, 0-11 KCAC).
McPherson was aggressive from the start as the Bulldogs' first shot of the game - a rocket by
Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) less than two minutes in - glanced off the crossbar. The Bulldogs were awarded three corner kicks in the first 20 minutes, finally capitalizing in the 21st when
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif.) took a
Heather Diamond (Lake Forest, Calif.) corner kick and sent a shot past York goalkeeper Kacee Walsh.
The 1-0 lead held through the halftime break despite McPherson outshooting York, 14-1, in the first 45 minutes. In the 55th minute, the Bulldogs extended the lead as a cross attempt by
Alexis Lynn (Pleasant Hill, Mo.) found the far post and ricocheted into the goal. Ten minutes later,
Allie Hicks (Bedford, Texas) made it 3-0 after knocking home another Diamond corner attempt.
The final goal came in the 86th minute.
Kelsey Eby (Kechi, Kan.) sent a service into the box for Lewis, who beat a challenge by Panthers backup keeper Caitlin Nipe and found the lower left 90.
Lewis finished with a match-high eight shots, including three on goal. Hicks added five shots, while
Dina Der Vartanian (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had four off the bench.
Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) made two saves while posting her seventh clean sheet of the season.
Brianna Bennett, Hannah Tomlin, Corrine McDonald and Cassandra Martinez each had one shot for York. Three goalkeepers combined for 11 saves.
With the victory, the Bulldogs finished tied with Oklahoma Wesleyan and Tabor for fifth place in the KCAC, but received the No. 7 seed in the upcoming KCAC Tournament due to a series of tiebreakers. McPherson will face second-seeded Kansas Wesleyan University in a tournament quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Friday night at the Graves Family Sports Complex in Salina. The Coyotes won the regular-season matchup between the schools, 3-0, on Sept. 28 in Salina.
