McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- A
Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland) rebound goal in the 21st minute held up as the only score in McPherson College's 1-0 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) men's soccer win over York College on Tuesday night at McPherson Stadium.
The Bulldogs (12-4-2, 7-3-1 KCAC) held a slim 13-10 edge in shots and took three corner kicks to just one for the Panthers (5-11-2, 2-8-1 KCAC), but saw a number of chances thwarted by the raised flag of the assistant referee. McPherson was called for being offside 11 times in the contest.
Kelly gave McPherson the lead when he slammed home a free ball after York goalkeeper Ighor Tavares saved a shot by the Bulldogs'
Jared Robbins (Cotati, Calif.).
Jesus Pescador (Valencia, Calif.) and
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) led McPherson with three shots apiece, while Kelly and
David Mwinga (Santa Rosa, Calif.) added two each.
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany) made three saves while recording a clean sheet.
Guilherme Camargo (four) and Jovanny Ruiz (three) accounted for seven of York's 10 shots. Tavares made six saves in a complete-game effort.
With the victory, the Bulldogs locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming KCAC Tournament and a home quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Bethany (7-7-2, 6-3-2 KCAC). The teams will square off at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Kennel. McPherson won the regular-season meeting with the Swedes, 3-0, last Saturday.
