Rivalry Game in McPherson on Thursday

– On February 4th the MC women's basketball squad will welcome inter-county rival Bethany College to the Sport Center; start time for the JV game is set for 2:00 p.m. (CT) with the varsity women's tilt at 6:00.  The game is Pink Out Night so be sure to wear your pink!

Scouting McPherson

The Lady 'Dogs are 10-15 this year and hold a 7-8 conference record.  Following a 5-1 showing to start 2016, Mac has lost back-to-back games with their most recent defeat coming in a tight game with the Friends University Falcons on Saturday, 71-62.

Last Time Out – The first half really hindered McPherson as they made just 7-of-30 in the game's opening 20 minutes.  Friends didn't fare much better but still led 32-23 at halftime.  Mac kept the game close in the third quarter and the score sat at 46-39.  The Bulldogs fell behind by 13 in the fourth but then got within five in the closing seconds; unfortunately there just wasn't enough time for the comeback to finish as MC fell 71-62.  MC went 31.1% from the field, 19-of-62, with just 2-of-16 three balls falling through; they made 22-of-31 foul shots.  The team tallied 44 rebounds along with 17 turnovers, nine steals, four assists, and one blocked shot.

Ashton Bruner scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws; she pulled down six rebounds and had a team-high two assists.  Bailey Brown dropped in just 4-of-14 from the floor but made 10-of-14 from the stripe for her 18 points; the senior had six rebounds as well.  Amanda Allen scored eight points for MC and recorded a team-high eight rebounds.

Year at a Glance –The Bulldogs are scoring 63.4 points a night while allowing 66.5, both are in the middle of the conference.  The team makes 48.3% from the floor which is fourth in the league; they knock in 27.3% from three and 67.9% from the charity stripe.  MC tallies a third-best 40.8 rebounds each time out along with 8.9 assists, 7.7 steals, and 3.0 blocks.

Bruner is putting 16.3 points a night through for MC and leads the team in field goals made with 86; she is also the top rebounder with her 9.1 average.  Brown is a close second at 15.8 points each night and has made 100-of-122 from the stripe; the 5-4 guard is second on the team in rebounding, pulling in 5.5 a game.  Georgia Smart is a distant third on the scoring list with her 7.8ppg; she also tallies 4.3 rebounds every time she hits the court.

Bulldogs in the National Rankings – Bruner is now 13th in the NAIA in total rebounds with 217 and ranks 20th in defensive boards a game at 6.5.  Bruner sits 20th in free throw percentage at 83.4% for the season.  The Lady 'Dogs are 20th in the nation in total rebounds with 996 for their 25 games.

MC stays at home for their next outing as they host Tabor College on February 6th for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.

 

 

Scouting Bethany

The Lady Swedes sit at 8-15 on the year and are 4-10 in the KCAC; BC is 4-5 in the New Year and will head into Thursday's contest coming off an 83-79 victory over then-No. 2 in the conference Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

Last Time Out – Bethany held the lead for nearly the entire opening quarter and were out in front 23-22 after the first.  The Swedes pushed their advantage to nine with just four minutes remaining in the half, however, a 15-0 run by OKWU gave the Eagles a 41-35 lead at the break.  BC surged out of the locker room and quickly took their lead back and increased it to five before the midway point of the third; the Swedes stayed in front the rest of the period and led 60-58 with 10 minutes to go.  It was a very tight fourth and clutch shooting by Bethany in the final minutes gave them the 83-79 win.  BC shot in 33-of-67 for the game, 49.3%, but were just 2-of-10 from behind the arc; they made a poor 15-of-28 from the foul stripe.  The team pulled in 53 rebounds as they took advantage of a rough shooting night for OKWU; the Swedes also had 23 turnovers, 23 assists, 10 steals, and five blocks.

Paige Stewart shot the ball well for BC, scoring a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting with all three free throws dropping.  Joleen Chanco was a close second with her 18 points on 6-of-11 field goals and 5-of-7 foul shots.  Kimi Lindshield scored 15 on 7-of-14 field goals and 1-of-4 from the stripe; the junior transfer had a rare triple-double as she tabbed 15 rebounds and 10 assists.  Both Dominque Davis and Sydney Ahaneku put 11 points on the board for Bethany; Davis was 4-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from the line while Ahaneku was a perfect 4-of-4 shooting with 3-of-6 free throws falling.

Year at a Glance – The Swedes are at the bottom of the league in terms of scoring, putting up just 59.2 points each time out; their -7.8 scoring margin is 10th.  Bethany makes 38.8% of their field goals with 27.5% falling through from behind the arc; they net 67.9% of their foul shots.  The team tallies 37.3 rebounds per contest as well as 10.9 assists, 8.2 steals, and 2.9 blocks; they are third in the KCAC in steals a game.

Adriane Davis is the top scorer for the Swedes with her 12.7ppg; she has bucketed a team-high 13 three balls and is 36-of-41 from the stripe.  Chanco is second at 12.0 points a contest; she also brings in 6.5 rebounds each time out.  Lindshield tallies 9.8 points on average and also 6.3 boards; the forward has made a team-high 48 field goals and 41 free throws.  Stewart is also close to 10 points per game.

Bethany will make the trip to Sterling, Kansas to take on Sterling College on February 6th for their next contest.
