North Newton, Kan. – McPherson College softball found themselves in a hole heading into the seventh inning of both their doubleheader games on Wednesday at Bethel College. In game one, the 'Dogs took the lead only to have it ripped away in the bottom of the inning. In the second, Mac cut their deficit in half but fell short.
Game 1 – L 3-2
The opening game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel as only 10 hits were recorded by the two teams with four of those coming in the seventh inning.
Bethel scored one in the first with their leadoff hitting a solo shot. Four scoreless innings later and McPherson answered with a run of their own in the sixth to tie things up.
The 'Dogs took the lead in the top of the seventh, 2-1, but BC was able to bring two around in the bottom to end the game at 3-2 in favor of the Lady Threshers.
Five different MC players logged a hit with Shelby Maycumber getting on once via a hit and again by drawing a walk.
Sydney Lang pitched the complete game for Mac; she allowed the three runs on five hits and zero walks. The freshman struck out five of the 24 batters she faced.
Game 2 – L 6-3
The second contest provided a few more hits and runs. Bethel again scored in their first frame and again in the fourth. The Threshers put three runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, increasing their advantage to 5-0; another run in the sixth pushed McPherson's deficit to six runs.
The Bulldogs battled in the seventh and a three-run homerun by Kayla Bourgeois cut the BC lead in half. Unfortunately that's where the scoring stopped for Mac and the home team took the game 6-3.
Bourgeois was 2-of-3 at the plate with the three Runs Batted In. Emily Davis earned two walks for the Bulldogs and Maycumber made it aboard on a walk and base hit for the second-straight game.
On the mound for the first five and two-third innings was Katie Usdansky; she allowed five runs on 10 hits. Lang finished the game for the MC pitching staff.
McPherson will host Sterling College this Saturday at Wall Park starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)
