SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The McPherson College men's soccer team outshot St. Gregory's University, 19-2, Saturday but could only come away with a 1-0 win on a rough pitch at Father Victor Roberts Field.
Brayam De La Cruz (Bellevue, Idaho) tallied the game's lone goal in the 17th minute off an assist from
Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif.).
McPherson peppered the ball at St. Gregory's keeper Adrian Cole throughout the night, due mostly to the Bulldogs' 2-to-1 advantage in possession. While Cole was able to make some outstanding stops en route to seven saves, McPherson players hit the post twice, the crossbar twice and missed an open net. McPherson finished with nine shots on goal to St. Gregory's one.
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) finished with a game-high seven shots, including three on goal.
David Mwinga (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and
Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland) each added three shots, with all of Mwinga's finding the frame. De La Cruz also had two shots.
Gabriel Martinez had both of St. Gregory's shots with one landing on frame.
Aaron Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) got the start in goal for McPherson, playing the entire first half without facing a shot on goal.
Arthur Lamparter (Schweinfurt, Germany) played the second half, making one save.
"We controlled the match throughout but just couldn't finish," said head coach
Doug Quint. "That is two games in a row where we lacked composure in front of the goal. Defensively, we kept thing organized and played well today."
McPherson concludes a stretch of four straight road games Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Salina to face Kansas Wesleyan University in the team's KCAC opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
