KANSAS CITY, Mo. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over Avila University on Saturday afternoon at the Zarda Multisport Complex.
The Bulldogs (3-0) grabbed the lead in the third minute as senior
Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) headed in a goal off a service into the box by
Ana Guerrero (jr., Graton, Calif.).
After out-shooting Avila, 8-3, in the first half, McPherson withstood a barrage from the Eagles in the second half. The hosts held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the second half.
Guerrero finished with a team-best five shots but only one found the frame. Lewis and
Danielle Kakebeen (jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had two shots each, while
Astrid Alvarez (jr., Flagstaff, Ariz.) and
Rhea Vale (jr., London, England).
Kristina Scott had four of Avila's 10 shots, including three of seven on goal, after coming off the bench.
Defending KCAC Defensive Player of the Week
Sheryl Evans (sr., Nassau, Bahamas) was credited with six saves while preserving a clean sheet for the Bulldogs. Shea Meyer had four saves for the Eagles. Each team was credited with a team save.
"Our ladies put in a solid 90-minute performance today against a good side on the road," said head coach
Doug Quint.
"The goal we scored came from a combination play out wide to free up Ana Guerrero," added Quint. "She then served a ball into the box and Cydney headed the ball in. It was a fantastic goal."
The Bulldogs are idle until Wednesday, September 14, when they travel to Manhattan Christian College.
