Men's Soccer Posts Clean Sheet Against Bethany

LINDSBORG, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College men's soccer team posted its second straight clean sheet with a 3-0 victory over Bethany College Saturday night at Lindstrom Field.

The Bulldogs (7-6, 6-2 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) struck in the 13th minute as Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif., College of the Canyons) chipped a ball off the outside of his foot that snuck past Bethany goalkeeper Mike Wick. The lead held through the halftime break as McPherson held a slim 9-8 edge in shots in the first half.

McPherson added to its lead in the 58th minute as Jared Robbins (Cotati, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) lofted a long service into the box that was chased down by Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland, St. Ambrose HS), who beat Wick one-on-one for the goal. Kelly also factored into the Bulldogs' final goal. In the 65th minute, he sent a cross into the box that Diego Loza (San Diego, Calif., San Diego Mesa College) put on frame. Wick made the initial stop, but Loza was there to put back the rebound into the open goal.

The Bulldogs outshot the Swedes, 14-7, in the second half and 23-15 overall. The advantage in shots on goal was slimmer, though, with McPherson holding just a 7-5 edge.

Kelly was credited with a match-high six shots, including two on goal, while Loza had five shots. Gomez and Greg Roller (Topeka, Kan., Pratt CC) each added three shots.

DeShaun Ruiz (Choctaw, Okla., Carl Albert Senior HS) got the start in goal for McPherson, making two saves in 42:17 before leaving after a collision in front of the goal. Jose Alonso (Wichita, Kan., Derby HS) played the final 47:43 and made a pair of saves while completing the shutout.

Mateo Agudelo had a team-high three shots for Bethany (4-10-1, 3-5 KCAC). Wick was credited with four saves.

"It was a nice three points on the road for us tonight," said head coach Doug Quint. "We got the opportunity to play a lot of guys and that is always nice. I thought we had some good moments and did some nice things in possession again tonight. To have two shutout victories on the road this week was certainly nice. This is a fun group to work with and we, as a staff, enjoy every minute of it."

McPherson returns to the pitch Wednesday, Oct. 25, when it hosts University of Saint Mary in another KCAC matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
