Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to Four With Sweep of Southwestern

McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College volleyball team captured its fourth straight victory Wednesday evening with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-18 decision over Southwestern College at the Sport Center.

The Bulldogs (11-5, 7-3 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) posted a .248 hitting percentage overall on 44 kills and 14 errors on 121 total attacks, while the Moundbuilders (3-14, 1-10 KCAC) were limited to a .061 hitting percentage and just 25 kills in the match.

McPherson grabbed an early 6-3 lead to open the match, but Southwestern responded with a 5-2 run to tie the score at 8-8. The Bulldogs won the next three rallies on a Devrie Sombers (Colorado Springs, Colo., Pinecreek HS) kill and a pair of Builder errors to take a lead they would not relinquish. Southwestern cut the McPherson advantage to just one at 14-13, but the Bulldogs rattled off six of the next seven points to put the set out of reach.

The Bulldogs dominated the second set from start to finish, using 8-2 runs to start and finish the set. McPherson had 15 kills against just three errors on 40 attacks for a .300 hitting percentage. Southwestern hit just .000 with six kills and six errors on 33 attacks.

McPherson scored the first six points of the third set en route to an 11-1 lead before Southwestern opted to take a timeout. The Builders would rally, cutting the lead to five at 20-15 capped by back-to-back aces by Alyxandra Blaker, but the Bulldogs were able to score five of the last eight points, including the final three, to close out the match.

Lexi Kite (Thornton, Colo., Prairie View HS) led all players with 11 kills and a .310 attack percentage. Sombers added eight kills, two service aces and a solo block, while Mady Woog (Highlands Ranch, Colo., Mountain Vista HS) had six kills and three blocks (one solo). Leia Seiler (Fort Lupton, Colo., Fort Lupton HS) matched Woog with six kills and Jamie Siess had a match-high 14 digs.

Kaitlyn Heinis (Oviedo, Fla., Paul J. Hagerty HS) edged Morgan Little (Las Vegas, Nev., Hutchinson CC), 18-16, for the team lead in assists and also had four service aces.

Kanami Ellis led Southwestern with seven kills, while Lezlee Dixon added six and Blaker five. Catabrean Baumann had 13 assists and six digs, and Colbi Phillips and Rylie Ingram posted nine digs apiece.

The Bulldogs look to make it five wins in a row when they travel to Sterling College on Friday night for another KCAC matchup. First serve for the varsity match is slated for 7 p.m.
