Men's Soccer Stumbles at Friends

WICHITA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- Christopher Kelly (Glasgow, Scotland, St. Ambrose HS) tallied a goal and an assist but Friends University handed McPherson College its first defeat in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) men's soccer play with a 4-2 decision Wednesday night at Adair-Austin Stadium.

The Bulldogs (3-5, 2-1 KCAC) struck first as Erik Espinoza (San Ysidro, Calif., San Diego Mesa College) scored in the 11th minute off a feed from Kelly.

The Falcons (4-5, 3-0 KCAC) answered in the 18th minute as Roberto Gomez scored off an assist from Gabriel Chavez. Chavez added a goal of his own in the 37th minute, only to be answered three minutes later by an unassisted tally by Kelly.

Friends added a tally late in the first half as Marcos Gomez assisted on a Luis Vidal Pla goal in the 43rd minute.

McPherson was unable to answer in the second half, while the Falcons added an insurance goal off the foot of Matt Sherrod in the 74th minute.

Friends had a slim 11-9 edge in shots but a commanding 10-4 advantage in corner kicks - including 7-2 in the first half.

Edward Gomez (Lancaster, Calif., College of the Canyons) was the lone Bulldog with multiple shots, while Jose Alonso (Wichita, Kan., Derby HS) was credited with three saves.

Pla, Nicolas Fornari and Leonardo Catarina each had two shots for the Falcons.

Armondo Aragonez made five saves in goal for Friends.

The Bulldogs return to the pitch Saturday afternoon when they host Bethel College at McPherson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
