Softball Goes 1-2 on Opening Day of Cowtown Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 FORT WORTH, Texas (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College softball team opened the 2017 season by posting a 1-2 mark on the first day of the Cowtown Classic Friday, falling to William Penn University and Texas Wesleyan University before topping Bacone College in the day's finale.

Game 1 --- William Penn 4, McPherson 3
Taylor Hires-Caulk (Fernley, Nev., Central Arizona College) hit a solo home run and Judith Salazar (Santa Maria, Calif., Allen Hancock College) had a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs, which finished with six hits on offense. Sydney Lang (Topeka, Kan., Shawnee Heights HS) threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits, while striking out one.

Game 2 --- Texas Wesleyan 9, McPherson 1 (6 innings)
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as Hires-Caulk reached on an error and scored on a Chelsea Conrad (Ione, Calif., Argonaut HS) groundout in the third inning. McPherson was limited to just one hit in the contest, though, a double by Conrad down the left-field line in the sixth inning. Texas Wesleyan pounded out 14 hits, led by three each by Kayla Prachyl, Bailey Terry and Demi Dotson. The Rams had three doubles and a triple.

Game 3 --- McPherson 10, Bacone 9
Azaria Romero (McPherson, Kan., Kansas Wesleyan University) scored on an Amanda Connell (Wichita, Kan., Circle HS) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bulldogs a walk-off victory. Salazar had four hits, including three doubles, and two RBIs, while Hires-Caulk, Conrad and Valerie Romero (Lakewood, Calif., West Hills CC) each had a pair of hits. Jordynn Corea (Amarillo, Texas, Tascosa HS) threw one inning of scoreless relief to pick up the win in the circle.

"With this being the opening weekend, I am pleased with day one's performances," said head coach Ashley Spencer. "We had a variety of players who contributed in different ways. We showed a lot of poise for it being our first games of the year. The third game was exciting for our team as we were able to prove our depth and mental toughness during pressure situations."

McPherson faces a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference foes to close out play Saturday at the Cowtown Classic. The Bulldogs play Doane at 9 a.m., then meet Morningside at 1 p.m.
