Reily Martin (Auburn, Kan., Hayden HS) drove in two runs as the McPherson College baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to (RV) Oklahoma City University Wednesday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium.
After each team left a pair of runners on base in the first inning, Oklahoma City (18-3) broke through for a pair of runs in the second inning off Bulldog reliever
Cameron Oram (Cody, Wyo., Cody HS) after leading off the inning with four straight hits and a walk.
The Stars extended the lead to 8-0 with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. The big hit came in the seventh when Hunter Aguirre rapped a two-run single.
McPherson (7-12) broke up the shutout with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitters
John Feaster (Gastonia, N.C., Junction City HS) and
Darrian Moss (Lancaster, Texas, Wilmer Hutchins HS) reached on back-to-back fielding errors by the Oklahoma City infielder then scored on a two-run double to left-center by Martin.
Oklahoma City responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Jerame Littell hit an RBI single to right, then scored along with Branden Grieger when Joe Lytle hit a two-run single back up the middle.
The Bulldogs were limited to five hits and four walks by four Stars pitchers. In addition to Martin's double in the eighth,
Dylan Klava (Douglas, Wyo., Colby CC) and
Dylan Fontenot (Lafayette, La., Carencro HS) each had a base hit and drew a walk.
Trevor Haycock (New Iberia, La., New Iberia Sr. HS) and
Lane Fleming (Council Grove, Kan., Council Grove HS) accounted for the other two hits.
Littell was 5-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Stars (18-3). Garrett Foster had four hits and Lytle had two hits and three RBIs.
The Bulldogs used seven pitches in the game with Oram taking the loss after allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in the second inning.
Oklahoma City starter Holden Lyons pitched four scoreless innings, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out three but didn't factor into the decision. Ken Williams threw a scoreless fifth inning to get the win.
McPherson opens Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) play this weekend with a three-game series at York College. First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Levitt Stadium in York, Nebraska. The series wraps up with a single 9-inning game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
