Baseball Roughs Up Kansas Wesleyan in Series Opener

McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- Trevor Haycock (New Iberia, La., New Iberia Sr. HS) and Lane Fleming (Council Grove, Kan., Council Grove HS) each hit two home runs and Matthew Green (Torrance, Calif., Brethren Christian HS) threw a complete game as McPherson College posted a 12-2, 7-inning win over Kansas Wesleyan University in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) baseball contest Saturday night at Light Capital Diamond.

The Coyotes (21-19, 4-11 KCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Mark Segat.

McPherson (16-22, 7-9 KCAC) countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Haycock drew a one-out walk from KWU starter Brandon Wescher. Fleming followed with a two-run blast, sending the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence.

Kansas Wesleyan loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning on an error and a pair of walks, but got Segat to ground out to end the inning.

Haycock extended the McPherson lead to 4-1 with a two-run shot to right field in the third, then hit a three-run blast as part of a six-run fourth inning.

The second Haycock homer was preceded by a two-run single by Dylan Klava (Douglas, Wyo., Colby CC) and followed by a solo homer from Fleming.

Following a scoreless fifth, KWU's Michael Price cut the deficit to 10-2 with a solo homer in the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs closed out the game via run rule with a pair of runs in the seventh. Evan Willow (Victoria, B.C., Canada, Lambrick Park HS) led off the inning with a single to right-center, then pinch-runner Tristan Hawkinson (Hutchinson, Kan., Buhler HS) moved around when Reily Martin (Auburn, Kan., Hayden HS) drew a walk and Desmond Grayson (Olathe, Kan., Olathe North HS) singled to center to load the bases. Jackson Goodmiller (St. George, Kan., Rock Creek HS) delivered the final stroke with a double to right field.

Green scattered two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four to get the complete-game win for McPherson.

"Matt Green's maturity as a pitcher has been a pleasure to watch," said head coach Bryan Moses. "He was recruited as a shortstop and he has been phenomenal for us - the leader of the staff, without question. So, what he does with this effort today, is that he saves our [bullpen], so we're fresh for the two games tomorrow. It was really nice to not have to go to the [bullpen]."

Haycock finished with two hits, five RBIs and three runs scored, while Fleming pitched in with two hits, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Grayson had a pair of hits and Goodmiller and Klava each drove in two.

Wescher lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out five to take the loss for KWU. Travis Schnoor threw the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks.

Segat had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run to lead the Coyotes. Price collected the final KWU hit.

"On certain days, you come out to Light Cap and its very offensively-oriented," added Moses. "I don't think that was necessarily the case today, even with the wind blowing out. I thought Haycock and Fleming were just dialed in today and, I think on other days, those balls are probably gone as well. If you have two guys in your lineup that are that dialed in that much, you're going to have a fun time putting up runs."

The teams close out the three-game series Sunday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Light Capital Diamond.
