Leavenworth, KS – After a rough first half of the season, the McPherson College men's soccer team seems to have found its stride. They went on the road Saturday defeating Saint Mary 4-0, extending their current winning streak to 3 games, and improving their season record to within 1 game of .500 at 5-6-3. The win also put them at 5-2-2 in the KCAC, and moved them up into the 5
th position in the conference standings.
The opening half was relatively uneventful as neither team was able to generate any quality scoring opportunities. After the intermission, however, the Bulldog men came alive. They erupted for four goals in a 26 minute span beginning in the 57
th minute.
Chris Kelly (Sr. Glasgow, Scotland), got the Bulldogs on the board when he slotted a ball past the keeper on a pass from
Guido Battisini (Jr. Pilar, Argentina).
Seven minutes later, the Bulldogs struck again, this time on a shot by
Hernan Maldonado (Sr. National City, Calif.), assisted by
Diego Loza (Sr. San Diego, Calif.). At 2-0, the Bulldogs had the game well in hand, but they added two more insurance goals in the 77
th and 83
rd minutes.
Sean Thomson (Fr. Dorset, England) scored the 3
rd goal on an assist from
Dennis Schorb (Fr. Malsch, Germany), and the 4
th was scored by Loza, assisted by Thomson.
The Bulldogs dominated nearly every statistical category in the game. They outshot the Spires 15-6, and 8-3 in shots on goal. They also won the corner kick battle 3-1.
Thomas Kleywegt (Jr. Gravesend, England) was between the pipes for the Bulldogs, and came away with 3 saves.
"In the first half we played well in possession just really had trouble finding gaps in their defense", said Mac head coach
Doug Quint.0" At half-time we made a few adjustments and it was great to see our guys execute what we talked about. Our second half performance was really good."
Next up for the Bulldogs is a Wednesday afternoon matchup this week, on the road against York College. The Bulldogs and Panthers will square off in York, Nebraska at 3:00 pm on the 24
th.
