Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bulldogs Get their First KCAC Win over Southwestern

By Drew Brunecz

The McPherson Women's Basketball team got a big win as they came back to defeat Southwestern 66-56. This was the Bulldogs first KCAC win of the season.

The first quarter was pretty competitive the whole time, with the Bulldogs leading for most of it. They even led by seven at one point. The second quarter is when McPherson went into a slump. They did not shoot very well, as they went 6/16 from the floor in the second. From the end of the first quarter through the second, the Builders went on a 13-0 run to lead 27-19 at one point. They even led by 11 points during the second quarter. Fortunately, the Bulldogs went on a run towards halftime, so they only trailed by five at the half, 31-26.

The third quarter was incredibly competitive as well. The largest lead either team had was four. By the end of the period, the Bulldogs had trimmed the deficit from five to three, 40-37, and they were in position to make a run in the final 10 minutes. The fourth quarter is when the Bulldogs pulled away, eventually winning the game by 10, outscoring the visitors by 7 in the quarter.

Building off the momentum they gained in their loss to Sterling on Thursday, The Bulldogs shot 39% from the floor overall, and 35% from beyond the arc against the Moundbuilders on Saturday.

Brittany Roberts (So. Mansfield, Texas) was the star tonight. Roberts was the leader in both points (20), and rebounds (11) in 31 minutes of action. Asya Tims (Jr. Ada, Ok.) did her part as well, adding 14 points of her own, and a game-leading four assists.

McPherson head coach, Josh Nichols, commented on the win saying, "It felt good to get the first KCAC of the season. I Thought we let them get the ball into the paint way too much in the first half. We went to the zone early in third quarter I really think was the difference in the game. With Slim [Sonerka White] out we had our bench step up and play well today. We got a big 3 by Elle [Gillen] and Kristen [Potter] had 2 big steals late in the 4th quarter. Overall it was a good team win."

With the win, the Bulldogs snap a 5 game losing streak, and move to 6-5 overall, and 1-5 in the KCAC. They will try to use this momentum to start a winning streak, as they play the York College Panthers, at home next Wednesday, at 6:00 PM.
