TOPEKA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College men's tennis team fell to 2-2 overall with a 9-0 loss to Washburn University Friday night at Topeka Country Club.
McPherson, ranked 19th in the NAIA, were playing without all-American
Ahmed Lahlou (Casablanca, Morocco, Groupe Scolaire Anfa). With Lahlou out of the lineup, the Bulldogs struggled against the Ichabods (4-1) - the 21st-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
Jacob Turley (Milton Keynes, England, Cedars Upper School) and
Andreas Huber (Forstinning, Germany, Franz-Marc-Gymnasium) fell to Aleja Valarezo Plaza and Blake Hunter, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles, while
Julien Bodin (Cartagena, Spain, Las Salinas) and
Daan Coppelmans (Waalre, The Netherlands, Sint-Joriscollege Eindhoven) were shut out at the number two spot and
Hector Carrillo Perales (Barcelona, Spain, Bon Salvador) and
Kurt Burton (Bromely, London, England, The Ravensbourne School) were defeated, 8-1, at the number three spot.
Turley fell to Valarezo, the No. 4 nationally-ranked player in NCAA Division II, by a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles, then Carrillo fell to Paul Haase, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot to clinch the match victory.
Washburn closed out the match with straight-set victories at second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles.
The Bulldogs return to the courts next Friday with a pair of exhibition matches in Midlothian, Texas, against Tyler Junior College and Seward County Community College before facing NCAA Division II St. Edwards University at Heritage High School, also in Midlothian, on Saturday, March 3.
