Jackson Goodmiller (St. George, Kan., Rock Creek HS) and
Dylan Fontenot (Carencro, La., Carencro HS) had two hits apiece to lead McPherson College, but Ottawa University posted 20 hits in a 13-3, 7-inning Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) baseball victory Sunday at Alumni Park.
The Braves grabbed the early lead when Evan Brull drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning.
The Bulldogs stranded runners at the corners in the second inning, then tied the game with a run in the third.
Brevin Baessler (Tempe, Ariz., Western Nebraska CC) hit a two-out triple to deep left-center, then scored when
Lane Fleming (Council Grove, Kan., Council Grove HS) reached on an error.
Ottawa responded in the bottom half of the frame as Trevor McClanahan and Tyler Quintana led off the with back-to-back singles. McClanahan came across when Hecmart Nieves grounded into a double play to give the Braves a 2-1 advantage.
Both teams tacked on another run in the fourth inning with Fontenot scoring courtesy of an error after leading off the top of the fourth with a single to left-center. Sheldon Paramore doubled in Dalton Rankin for Ottawa in the bottom half of the inning.
McPherson was retired in order in the top of the fifth, while the Braves tallied four runs off five hits in their half of the inning to push their lead to 7-2.
After a scoreless sixth, the Bulldogs tallied one run in the seventh. Goodmiller reached on a single down the left-field line, then moved to third on consecutive ground-outs before scoring on a passed ball by Ottawa catcher Willies Estrada.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Braves got to McPherson reliever
Josh Lewis (Loveland, Colo., Thompson Valley HS), tallying six runs on seven hits to end the game via the run rule. Quintana had a two-run single in the inning and then scored the winning run on an Estrada RBI single.
Cole Boardman picked up the win on the mound for Ottawa, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in four innings. Akoni Hamilton gave up one run on two hits to pick up a three-inning save.
McPherson starter
Josh Lewis (Loveland, Colo., Thompson Valley HS) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings.
Quintana had four hits and two RBIs, while Estrada and Paramore each added three hits and two RBIs.
McPherson returns to the diamond Tuesday evening with another matchup in the City Series against Central Christian College. First pitch from Tiger Stadium (formerly Light Capital Diamond) is slated for 6 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host Sterling College in a three-game KCAC series Friday and Saturday.
