WINFIELD, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's tennis team suffered its first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) loss, falling to (RV) Southwestern College, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex.
The Lady Builders (10-1, 1-0 KCAC) grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles. Anna Mankoski and Meghan Kindred defeated
Zoë Bouwmeester (Zutphen, Netherlands, Isendoorn College) and
Deiah Curtis (Great Bend, Kan., Bethany College) at the No. 2 spot, then accepted a forfeit victory at No. 3.
Brittany Zipf (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, Emmaus College) and
Besa Bwalya (Hoisington, Kan., Hoisington HS) put McPherson (2-2, 2-1 KCAC) on the board with an 8-1 win over Brailey McMinn and Abbi Groff at the top doubles spot.
In singles play, the Bulldogs picked up straight-set wins from Zipf and Bwalya at No. 1 and No. 2 but could not overcome forfeit losses at No. 5 and No. 6 as Southwestern closed out the dual. Zipf defeated Esperanza Contador, 6-1, 6-1, while Bwalya posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anna Mankoski. The Builders closed with a 6-4, 6-0 win by McMinn over Bouwmeester at third singles and a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win by Groff over Curtis at fourth singles.
McPherson begins a stretch of three straight home matches Saturday when Tabor pays a visit to the McPherson High School courts. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
