Curtis Wins Tiebreaker as Women's Tennis Edges Ottawa

EMPORIA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- McPherson College senior Deiah Curtis (Great Bend, Kan., Bethany College) won a match tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to clinch a 5-4 victory over Ottawa University in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) women's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at Emporia High School.

Curtis took the first set from Stephanie Rodriguez by a 6-4 score, but Rodriguez forced a match tiebreaker by winning the second set, 6-2. Curtis dominated the match tiebreaker, winning 10-2 to move the Bulldogs to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in KCAC play.

McPherson led 2-1 after doubles play as Brittany Zipf (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, Emmaus College) and Besa Bwalya (Hoisington, Kan., Hoisington HS) topped Rhian Shepherd and Allison Corfield, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles and Curtis and Zoë Bouwmeester (Zutphen, Netherlands, Isendoorn College) edged Rodriguez and Nicole Robbins, 9-8 (2), at No. 2 doubles.

The Braves received a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles, then two others at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to take a 3-2 lead overall.

In singles play, Zipf topped Shepherd, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot and Bouwmeester beat Robbins, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 spot for McPherson. Corfield bettered Bwalya, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot to knot the match at 4-4 and set the stage for Curtis' heroics.

The Bulldogs return to the court at 10 a.m. Thursday morning with a KCAC matchup against Sterling College (4-6, 3-1 KCAC) in Lyons, Kansas.
