McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College women's tennis team won all six contested matches en route to a 6-3 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Tournament first-round match Monday afternoon at McPherson High School.
After conceding the point at No. 3 doubles, the third-seeded Bulldogs (9-2) evened the score with an 8-2 win by
Brittany Zipf (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, Emmaus College) and
Besa Bwalya (Hoisington, Kan., Hoisington HS) at No. 1 doubles over Chelsea Bearrick and Jessica Smith.
Zoë Bouwmeester (Zutphen, Netherlands, Isendoorn College) and
Deiah Curtis (Great Bend, Kan., Bethany College) put together an 8-5 win over Paola Vargas and Brianna Mendoza at No. 2 doubles to give McPherson a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Bwalya made quick work of Mallory Lantz at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Curtis added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mendoza at the No. 4 spot to put the Bulldogs a point away from victory.
Zipf closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Vargas at No. 1 singles, while Bouwmeester wrapped up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bearrick moments later at No. 3 singles to set the final score.
The Coyotes (5-10) received forfeit victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
McPherson advances to Friday's KCAC Tournament semifinals where they will face second-seeded Tabor College. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.
