Kansas City, Mo. - The McPherson College Women's basketball team lost their second game in a row falling to the Avila Eagles Wednesday night 69-57. The Bulldogs kept the game close throughout but couldn't pull this one out.
The Eagles outscored the Bulldogs by six in the first and second quarters; the score was 17-11 in the first and 14-8 in the second. The Bulldogs entered halftime down 12, 31-19. The scoring was even for the rest of the night, with both teams scoring 17 in the third and 21 in the fourth.
The Bulldogs offense woke up somewhat in the second-half but their defense was not up to the task.
Brittany Roberts (Jr. Mansfield, Texas) had one of her patented double-doubles as she went for 17 points and 17 rebounds. Danielle Holt (Sr. Glenpool, Okla.) also fought her way to double figures, she finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. The Bulldogs shot 31.9% from the field, 12.5% from three and 47.6% from the free-throw line. Those percentages are certainly not a welcome sight to Coach Josh Nichols, who commented on the performance saying, "We didn't come out with enough focus and that showed the most in our shooting percentage in the first half. We came out in the second and played much better. Credit to Avila they hit big shots every time we made a mini run."
The loss moves the team to 9-8 on the season with a 5-6 record in KCAC play.
The Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday at Ottawa at 3 p.m.
