Winfield, Kan. – It was a tough night for the McPherson College football team, on the road against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. Coming off of back to back wins, the Bulldogs were handed their second loss of the season 45-7.
The Bulldogs struggled on both ends of the field, tallying just 125 yards of total offense, 15 on the ground, and 110 through the air, while the defense gave up 507 yards to the Builder offense. Max Tucker (Sr. St. Charles, Ill.) got the start for the Bulldogs at quarterback, going 9 of 13 for 38 yards. After making his Bulldog debut last Saturday against Friends University, Trent Graves (Fr. Colorado Springs, Colo.) saw significant time under center this week. He finished the game with 8 completions on 16 attempts for 72 yards, and one interception.
Ryan Wallace (So. Noble, Okla.), was the Bulldogs' leading receiver, finishing the game with five catches for 54 yards. On the ground Jacob Duke (Fr. Rush Springs, Okla.) saw his first action as a Bulldog and was the team's leading rusher with three carries for 15 yards. The Bulldogs' lone touchdown was an 8 yard rush by Corey Davis (Sr. Houston, Texas).
The only score of the first quarter was a 39 yard field goal by the Builders. Leading 3-0, Southwestern broke the game open in the second quarter scoring 28 points, and taking a 31-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldog defense held the Builders to just one touchdown in each of the last two periods, and the offense finally got on the board on Davis' score late in the fourth.
With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 3-2 on the year. They are slated to go back on the road next weekend for an afternoon match-up with the Ottawa University Braves. It is a 1:00 pm scheduled kick-off.
