Corpus Christi, Texas – The McPherson College softball team wrapped up their opening weekend at the Southern Collegiate Invitational by splitting Saturday's games against Our Lady of the Lake University and Texas Wesleyan University.
The Bulldogs opened the day with a 10-1 loss to the OLLU Saints, but bounced back to win their finale with the TXWU Rams 3-2. The offense struggled against the Saints, scoring just one run on five hits, and stranding seven runners on base. The only extra base hit in the game was a double off of the bat of Kylecia Taylor (Jr. Junction City, Kan.)
Raegan Kleppe, (Fr. McKinney, Texas), who picked up two wins in the circle on Friday, had a rough outing against the Saints in Saturday's opener. She went an inning and a third, allowing eight runs on nine hits and was collared with the loss.
In the finale against Texas Wesleyan, the Bulldogs needed some late game heroics to narrowly defeat the Rams 3-2. Katy Wilson (Jr. Princeton, Texas) got the start in the circle, and she gave the Bulldogs six solid innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. When the Bulldog offense retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kleppe came out of the pen and got a shot at redemption. She set down the Rams in order to close out the game and picked up her first save of the season.
On offense, the Bulldogs did just enough to secure the win. They came up with three runs on four hits, half of them going for extra bases. Destiny Bacon (Jr. La Mesa, Calif.) had the hot bat for the Bulldogs going 2 for 3 win an RBI.
"Day 2 didn't start the way we wanted it but we saw some good things in a bad loss," commented Coach Segovia. The chemistry of this team is there, and that's very good to see this early. Game 2 was letting everything we had left in the tank out and we did that. Proud of all our kids. Long bus drive playing 5 games and going 3-2 is positive step in the right direction this early in the season."
Now at 3-2 on the season, the Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend, playing in the friendly confines of Bulldog Park for the first time this season. They will play at home on Saturday against Doane University and then again on Sunday against Mount Marty University. Double headers on both days start at 1 p.m.
