McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Ottawa University Braves at home on Wednesday night.
The conditions were less than favorable, with temps in the 40s, gusty winds, and rain for a majority of the game. Two of the three goals scored by the Braves were a result of ball taking a funny bounce on the slick, wet turf at McPherson Stadium.
The two teams played to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes of action, but the Braves broke the tie in the 63
rd minute of the game. On a long free kick with the wind at their backs, Ottawa played a ball into the 18 yard box. The Ball skidded off the turf, and went through the hands of Bulldog goal keeper So.
Emma Meinholdt. Seventeen minutes later the Braves made it 2-0 again on a shot that on a normal night is easily saved, but because of the conditions took a weird hop off the wet turf, and somehow found its way into the back of the net.
With time winding down, the Bulldogs cut the lead in half when Sr.
Ally Holloway took advantage of a failed clearance by a Braves' defender, and hammed the ball past the keeper. Unfortunately, just moments later a miscommunication by the Bulldogs' back line allowed an Ottawa attacker to get in behind and go 1 v 1 with Meinholdt. She slotted the ball past the Bulldog net minder to give the Braves a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs created numerous chances throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize and find the net.
The loss puts the Bulldogs at 3-8-1 on the year, and 2-8-1 in KCAC play. They will wrap up their season on Saturday with a road trip to Salina, Kansas to take on the KWU Coyotes at 5:00 pm.
