McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College baseball team went 3-0 at home this weekend, sweeping the Avila University Eagles out at Bulldog Park.
With winds blowing out all weekend, the Bulldog hitters feasted at the plate. In three games, the Bulldogs amassed 60 hits, over half (31) of them going for extra bases, and nearly half (15) of those left the yard. All of those hits led to 59 runs scored on the weekend to just 13 for the visiting Eagles.
The Bulldogs opened the weekend on Saturday winning game one, 26-2. The Bulldog offense racked up 27 hits including doubles by Kyle Lux, Malik Bond (2), Kris Perez (2), Jake Pearson, and Grant Asadoor, and homerun by James Canar (2), and Trevor Johnson. Lux had the hot bat for the Bulldogs. He finished game one 4 for 5 with five runs scored and another driven in.
Blake Maddock got the game one start on the mound for the Bulldogs. He worked the first three innings shutting out the Eagles on just two hits with five strikeouts but didn't factor into the decision. Instead the win went to Drake Miller, who went two and a third and gave up just one hit and had a pair of strikeouts.
In the second game, the Eagles actually had a brief lead 3-2 in the third inning before the Bulldogs scored the next seven runs to break the game open. They would go on to take game two, 13-6 with Zach Reynolds picking up the win. He came on in relief of starter Zachary Perkins, going three and two-thirds and allowing three runs on five hits.
Offensively, the Bulldogs pounded out another 15 hits, 11 of them for extra bases, led again by Lux who was a perfect 4 for 4 with three homeruns and four RBI. Hunter Robinson also saw the ball well. The DH went 3 for 4 and was a triple shy of the cycle.
The Bulldogs and Eagles finished the series on Sunday afternoon with MC completing the sweep with a 20-5 win. The Bulldog offense picked up where it left off the day before. They plated their 20 runs on 18 hits with 10 of the 18 hits of the multiple base variety.
Jake Pearson and Hunter Robinson led the Bulldog attack. Pearson was 3 for 4 with a double and a homerun and Robinson was a perfect 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single.
On the bump, Tyler Norris picked up the win, in relief of starter Charles Munns. Norris went four and two-thirds allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Coach Moses commented on the sweep saying, "Pretty complete weekend for the DOGS. We knew we had to accomplish this in order to keep pace with the rest of this great conference. Pitchers and hitters performed strongly in important situations. Now it is back to work"
With the three wins, the Bulldogs move to 21-2 overall, and 9-2 in KCAC play. They are scheduled to be back on the diamond again on Tuesday when they host the Tabor College Bluejays in a midweek conference game. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm out at Bulldog Park.
