McPherson, Kan. – It was a tough day for the McPherson College softball team, as they dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to intra-county rival Bethany College.
The Bulldog bats were cold all day registering only seven hits between the two games. In the opener, the Bulldogs managed five hits, but were shutout, falling to the Swedes 9-0. Three of the five Bulldog hits went for extra bases, a double by Maile Deutsch, and two by Mackenzie Egan.
Raegan Kleppe was in the circle, and took the loss in game one. She went four innings allowing six runs on ten hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Shelby Bonn came out of the pen in the fifth allowing three runs on three hits in two innings of work.
In the second game, the Bulldogs started out scoring the games' first run when Destiny Bacon tripled and then scored on an RBI single by Egan. Those two hits turned out being the only two hits of the game for the Bulldogs. Things were going smoothly for the Bulldogs, leading 1-0 through four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Swedes broke the game open, scoring nine runs. Unable to plate any runs in the bottom of the inning, the game ended via the run rule, 9-1.
Katy Wilson got the start in the circle in game two. She worked the first four innings, but left the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth. She was credited with five runs scored on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Kleppe came out of the pen and pitched the final inning giving up four runs on four hits. Wilson was credited with the loss.
"Today wasn't our day," commented Coach Segovia. "We will go back to work on Monday and get ready for Tuesday."
As Coach Segovia mentioned, the Bulldog will be back in action on Tuesday, going on the road for a doubleheader against the Sterling College Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Sterling, Kansas.
